Trio of university projects win 2023 RIBA Yorkshire awards

Trio of university projects win 2023 RIBA Yorkshire awards

The schemes include the new £12 million Creative Centre at York St John University by Tate+Co, which also won the region’s Building of the Year and Client of the Year awards.

Meanwhile, Sheppard Robson’s ‘generous and distinctive’ Anne Lister College at the University of York won the practice’s Natalia Maximova the Project Architect of the Year award. The Sir William Henry Bragg Building for the University of Leeds by ADP was the other higher education project to scoop a gong in the Yorkshire region.

The six-strong list of regional award winners was completed by Architect Studio Gedye’s Stumperlowe Park Road Sheffield – which was also named best small project – New Lodge Community in York by PRP and Hushh House near Richmond by Elliott Architects.

But there was no recognition for Whittam Cox Architects’ Béton House project, the third phase of the ongoing revamp of Sheffield’s 1960s Park Hill estate, which had been named on the original shortlist of 11 regional contenders.

The student housing scheme within the massive Brutalist landmark was crowned the winner in the Listed Building £5m and over category at last year’s AJ Retrofit awards and sits next to Mikhail Riches’ recently completed Phase 2 revamp.

All RIBA Yorkshire shortlisted projects were assessed by a regional jury. The winning schemes are now in the running for an RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence.

The winners of the National Awards will be announced on 22 June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year.
