West Country teenager one of three killed in Nottingham attacks

Young West Country student Barnaby Webber was one of the two students who was killed at around 4am this morning in Nottingham. Known as a talented sportsman, he had been walking home with a friend after a night out.

He was one of two 19-year-old University of Nottingham students killed in the city as a man went on a deadly rampage. Mr Webber, from Taunton, in Somerset, was the first of the victims to have been identified and pictured, reports The Mirror. The second University of Nottingham student victim has been named locally as Grace Kumar, reports Nottinghamshire Live, thought to be a hockey player in the university’s first team.

A man in his 50s was also fatally stabbed in a series of attacks that took place in the early hours of this morning (June 13). Additionally, three people remain in hospital, including a man who is in a critical condition and fighting for his life. They were injured when a man drove into them in a van.

Police said they are keeping an open mind over the motive and confirmed they are working with counter-terrorism investigators to establish what happened.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the deadly rampage and detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the violence. Police said that a young man and woman were stabbed to death at about 4am, in Ilkeston Road. The body of another victim was found in Magdala Road on the other side of the city.

Grace Kumar is believed to be the second student killed in Nottingham

A friend of the Mr Webber told the Mirror: “He was a friend of mine. He was just walking home from a club like we all do. They just got unlucky. They were just five minutes from home and both got stabbed by some random guy.”

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell, speaking outside a police station in the city, said: “Police were called to Ilkeston Road just after 4am after a member of the public reported that two people aged 19 had been stabbed and were unresponsive.

“We had a further call to another incident in Milton Street, where the driver of a stolen van had attempted to run over three people. As a result, one man is in hospital in a critical condition while two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries.

“The van was then stopped on Maple Street, where a man was tasered and detained by police officers on suspicion of murder.”
