West Midlands braced for sweltering temperatures as first 2023 heat warning issued

The West Midlands is braced for sweltering temperatures this weekend after the first heat health warning of 2023 was issued. Six regions are to be affected in England due to a heatwave that is supposed to sweep over the country.

Parts of the country will be left sizzling by an Iberian plume that has been whipped up by high pressure residing over the UK. The mercury could rise to as high as 29C or 30C in some areas, reports MirrorOnline.

The alert issued by the Met Office and the UK Health Security Agency will be in place from 9am on Friday 9 June, to 9am on Monday 12 June. The health and care sector could be impacted due to the temperature, it has warned.

The following regions have been hit with the heat warning:

  • West Midlands

  • East Midlands

  • London
  • East of England
  • South East
  • South West

Health experts say the coming days could likely see the country experience “our first sustained period of hot weather of the year”. The alert, which is a yellow one, means that the weather could increase the use of health services needed by vulnerable parts of the population, especially the elderly or those with pre-existing conditions.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “In the coming days we are likely to experience our first sustained period of hot weather of the year so far, so it’s important that everyone ensures they keep hydrated and cool while enjoying the sun. Forecasted temperatures this week will primarily impact those over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
