‘Wielding weapons and urinating in the street’: Nightmare neighbours left residents “living in fear”

Nightmare neighbours have been kicked out of a Teesside flat after they left neighbours ‘living in fear’.

The property, which is at the centre of suspected drug dealing and around-the-clock anti-social behaviour in Stockton, has been shut down after witnesses claimed that up to 60 people would visit the flat at ‘all times of the day and night’. As well as keeping anti-social hours, residents living near the Wembley Way flat reported people urinating in the street and drug paraphernalia littered around.

On Tuesday, Teesside Magistrates Court heard how those visiting the property used off-road motorbikes, caused a lot of noise and nuisance and created an intimidating environment, making the threat of violence ‘a real concern’ for those living on the street. One resident even said that they were afraid to leave their home after witnessing fighting and on some occasions weapons being used.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, in partnership with Cleveland Police, secured a Closure Order on the one-bedroomed property, which will now be inaccessible to anyone for three months. Councillor Norma Stephenson, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Access, Communities and Community Safety, said: “The shocking activities in and around this property at all times of day and night have made residents’ lives a misery, and they’ve had enough.

“People have an absolute right to live their lives in peace and not be scared to leave their own homes. I hope this closure order sends the message that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated in our communities and brings relief to people living in the area.
