Youth rugby club in Penryn celebrates record-breaking season

While the Men’s first team and the Women’s’ team at Penryn have both been having respectable seasons, it has been the youth teams that have been leading the way in Cornwall with successes for the under-16s and a historic record-breaking season for the Colts.

The Penryn Colts were joined again this season by players from Perranporth and St Agnes, as part of an ongoing initiative to keep Colts-age players involved in the game.

The hard work the combined clubs have put in has finally come to fruition with what can only be described as a record-breaking season as the current crop of Colts have won both the County Colts league and County Cup final, the first team to achieve this double victory.

Throughout the league season, the team pulled together to produce some attacking rugby, along with a defence that enabled them to go the whole league season unbeaten, a phenomenal achievement.

This all-around performance transferred to the cup competition as they saw off all opposition to face Redruth Colts in the final, another strong local Colts team.

However, even Redruth proved no match for the unstoppable Penryn/Perran/Aggie squad, who defeated Redruth 19-7 in an epic final clash down at Hayle.

The team made up of mainly first-year boys, has thrived in the move up to Colts rugby.

So much so, that five players from this group of players have represented Exeter Chiefs under-17s throughout the season, two have been selected for the Exeter Chiefs under-18s and a further seven players have been selected to train with Cornwall for next season’s under-18 team.

With a strong bunch of boys coming up to join this already impressive Colt’s age group next season, the future certainly looks bright for all three clubs, especially Penryn.

As well as an impressive Colts team , Penryn U16s have been racking up points and victories too. In this age group, the Borough boys teamed up with Perranporth. It was in the County Cup where they really came into their own, winning the Cornwall Plate final against Bude with a dominant team performance.

Playing an expansive game, they took a 19-point lead into the second half, where their strong forwards continued to deliver points, leading to an emphatic win of 38-0 to the Penryn Perranporth Barbarians.

With both the under 16 and under 18 age groups looking so strong at Penryn, combined with the growing success of the mini and juniors’ sections and with plans to re-establish girls’ rugby at the club the young players of Penryn are showcasing to all what a bright future rugby has up at the Borough.
