Age Co Mobility Reveals the Most Accessible Cities in the UK

PRESS RELEASE

Published May 30, 2023

This study evaluates and ranks all the cities in the UK in terms of accessibility.

LONDON, May 29, 2023 – Handicare in partnership with Age Co has published the results of a study that looked at all the cities in the UK and ranked them in terms of accessibility. To determine the most and least accessible cities, the study looked at different accessibility factors. These include the number of accessible parking locations, public toilets, and restaurants. The study then ranked the cities based on a percentage of their population.

According to data from the UK Parliament website, approximately 14.6 million UK residents were living with a disability by 2021. This translates to roughly 22% of the population. In order to empower these 14.6 million people to live as full a life as possible, it is crucial to factor them into any city planning. This study was created in order to highlight those cities that are making it a priority to ease mobility for those who have access needs.

The results of this study revealed the following:
Wells is the most accessible city in the UK, whereas Bradford is the least accessible city in the UK. 7 out of 10 of the most accessible cities are located in England, 2 in Scotland, and 1 in Northern Ireland. Finally, London is in the bottom 5 least accessible cities in the UK.

The most accessible cities in the UK over the 2022/2023 period, ranked in order, are Wells, Chichester, Ely, Truro, and Bath.
The least accessible cities in the UK over the 2022/2023 period, ranked in order, are Bradford, Sunderland, Wakefield, Birmingham, and London.
