AOT Road Construction Report for the Week of June 26, 2023  

Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways throughout Vermont for the week of June 26. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.  

Canada 

I-89 Highgate Springs – Travelers to Quebec are advised that Route 133 on the Canadian side of the border is closed between Champlain Road in Saint-Armand and Morgan Road in Pike River until approximately 07/15 for construction of an overpass. A local detour route is in place for motorists that need to travel to/through communities on the Route 133 route. Oversize and overweight vehicles may NOT use the detour and are strongly advised to seek alternate routes, use other points of entry, and avoid restricted routes.   

Interstates 

I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorist can expect lane closures Monday through Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday 6:00 a.m. to noon.  The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from MM 36.60 to Exit 8. 

I-89 Colchester – Motorists should expect to encounter rolling roadblocks on I-89 between Exits 14 and 17 on weekdays between 6:00 a.m.-7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. to facilitate blasting operations for the Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange project.  

I-89 Richmond – Travelers should expect shoulder closures southbound as crews work on a bridge replacement project on U.S. 2 over the interstate along with a potential northbound passing lane closure. A traffic alert will be provided if this is implemented. 

I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges. 

I-91 Barton-Derby – Daily, single lane closures are scheduled for multiple work zones on I-91 in both directions from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby for a paving project. Motorists should use caution on milled pavement surfaces. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph through the work zones will be in place.  

I-91 Bradford – Preventative maintenance repairs to multiple bridges north of Exit 16 are ongoing and permanent, single lane closures with a speed limit reduction to 55 mph are in place. 

I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Preventative maintenance repairs to bridges require multiple permanent work zones along I-91 in both directions near Exit 17 in Newbury and in the southbound lanes near Exit 20 in St. Johnsbury. In addition, the St. Johnsbury Exit 20 southbound on ramp has been closed and a signed detour is in place.  

A temporary crossover for northbound traffic has been implemented at Exit 15 in Fairlee as they work to complete a full deck replacement on the northbound bridge over Lake Morey Road. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.  

I-91 Lyndon-Barton – Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures (both NB and SB) in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Friday during daytime construction hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). There will be no weekend work in recognition of the holiday. Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. 

I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project over VT 121 is underway. Interstate 91 northbound and southbound have been reduced to one lane of travel across the bridges, and an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated with temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges. A speed reduction to 55 mph is in place within the project area on I-91. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone.   

I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 northbound between Westminster and Springfield. Motorists can expect lane closures northbound between Exit 5 and Exit 8. 

I-91 White River Junction – I-91 northbound Exit 10A will be temporarily closed starting on Tuesday, 06/27 between 6:00 a.m.-7:00 a.m. to allow for the installation of new drainage across the existing ramp.  The closure is anticipated to be in place until Thursday, 06/29 at 6:00 p.m.  During the closure traffic will be detoured to Exit 12 to reverse directions onto I-91 southbound to Exit 10A. Please plan for extended travel times.

Around the State   

Alburgh – A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother’s Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero Island and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and will be in place throughout the summer and fall. In addition to signals, vehicular traffic through the bridge site should expect periods of stopped traffic throughout the week. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place. Minor delays should be anticipated. 

Barre City – A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Motorists can expect short to moderate delays on VT 14/Maple Avenue with a single lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway on VT 110 for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. The bridge will be closed to all traffic starting Monday, 06/26, at 7:00 a.m. A signed 6.3-mile detour route is in place for motorists.  

Monday, 06/26 through Friday, 06/30, motorists can expect one side of the roundabout at the intersection of VT 110 and US 302 to be closed with alternating one-way traffic. Motorists can also expect a lane closure with alternating one-way traffic at the entrance of Old Route 302 from VT 110. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Bennington-Pownal – Work along VT 279 will include drainage structure repair, line striping, crack sealing, and milling.  There will be uneven lanes. A paving crew will work from the welcome center toward the New York border.  Motorists should expect delays.    

On U.S. 7, work will continue on the shoulders, ditches, and guardrails between Bennington village and the Massachusetts/Vermont border.  A lane closure with alternating traffic will be in effect. 

Berlin – Motorists should expect a single lane closure with alternating one-way traffic along U.S. 302 for a bridge replacement project. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Expect delays. 

Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 remains closed for roadway approach work for a bridge project. The detour route from VT 142 is up Cotton Mill Hill Road where separate signed detours are in place for cars and trucks. A turnaround and three-way stop configuration have been implemented on VT 142 to assist with the turn onto Cotton Mill Hill Road and motorists should watch for turning vehicles and reduce speed in this area. 

Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect moderate delays and multiple traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists should exercise caution driving through the project limits as there are varying roadway surfaces, including gravel. Speed limits throughout the project area have been reduced to 40 mph.   

Burlington – A roadway project continues along U.S. 7 (Shelburne Road, Shelburne Street, South Willard Street) to the intersection with U.S. 2, and Alt. U.S. 7 (North/South Winooski Ave, St. Paul Street) to the intersection with Riverside Avenue. Nighttime work hours are 7:00 p.m.-6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Expect delays in the vicinity of active operations. Parking restrictions will be in effect at various times. Please observe all posted parking restrictions. 

Burlington, Shelburne Street Roundabout – Construction continues on the Shelburne Street Roundabout located at the intersection of U.S. 7 (Shelburne Street, South Willard Street), Alt. U.S. 7 (Shelburne Street), Locust Street, and Ledge Road. Motorists should expect minimal traffic impacts throughout the week between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. 

Charlotte-So. Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Flagged, alternating traffic will be required in the vicinity of active operations. Delays may occur, particularly in the evening hours. 

Chester – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers and temporary signals.

Colchester – Construction continues on the Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange located along U.S 2/7. During daytime hours, motorists should expect single-lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. There will be intermittent stoppages weekdays between 6:00 a.m.-7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. to facilitate blasting. Wait times for blasting should not exceed 10 minutes.  

During nighttime hours, motorists should expect lane closures between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. At least one travel lane will remain open in each direction. 

Essex Junction – Work on the second phase of the Crescent Connector project is underway. Most work will focus on Railroad Street this week, which will be closed to through traffic. Please pay attention to signs and flaggers as you travel through the Five Corners. 

Hartford – A bridge replacement project is underway in Hartford. Motorists can expect one-way alternating traffic on VT 14 and minimal traffic impacts along the VA Cutoff Road and the south side of the bridge by Mill Road and Old River Road. Motorists should be vigilant and watch for trucks entering/exiting the project area. 

Hartland – The Hartland 3 Corners intersection project continues. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S. 5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection for conduit installation throughout the week. 

Hinesburg – Crews are constructing a new sidewalk on VT 116 from the Hinesburg Community School to a new development beyond Friendship Lane. Travelers may encounter intermittent periods of alternating one-way traffic when dump trucks and other equipment are needed onsite.  

Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 just east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River remains closed and traffic continues to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its eastern intersection with U.S. 4. Motorist should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge. 

A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road just east of West Hill Road. Early this week, motorists should expect changes in traffic patterns along U.S. 4 as crews implement the phase one detour. The phase one detour will temporarily shift traffic to the south side of U.S. 4, opposite of Spring Hill Road. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Marshfield-Danville – Motorists can expect daily lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 between Plainfield and Marshfield for a resurfacing project. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway are scarified and have a gravel surface with no markings indicating the centerline and edge line. 

Montpelier – A resurfacing project continues on U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Motorists may experience intermittent alternating one-way traffic packages throughout the full length of the project and can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic from Bailey Avenue to the start of the project limits at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line, and at the Memorial Drive and Bailey Avenue intersection. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Morgan – A culvert replacement project is underway on VT 111 southeast of Seymour Lake. VT 111 is closed between Bear Mountain Road and Whitehill Loop Road. The road will remain closed at this location until mid to late August. Local detour routes will be in effect. Minor delays may occur. 

Lyndon-Burke – A series of culvert replacements is underway along U.S. 5 between Lyndon and Burke. Expect to encounter alternating one-way traffic with short delays along U.S. 5 weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. between the VT 122/VT 114/U.S. 5 intersection continuing north to West Burke Village.  

New Haven – Traffic will continue to be redirected from VT 17 to the diversion road near East Street and Sawyer Road. Flaggers will be there to help construction vehicles in and out of the work zone, but otherwise two-way traffic will be maintained on the diversion road.

Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 100 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. A speed limit reduction to 40 mph is in effect with an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals. Motorists can expect minor delays through the work zone. 

 

Poultney – A bridge replacement project is ongoing at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where a yield to one-way alternating traffic pattern remains in place through the work zone. Local motorists should watch for trucks bringing in fill material as they will access both abutments intermittently over the coming weeks. 

Richmond – Replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89 is underway. Travelers can expect lane closures with traffic control present allowing for one lane of alternating travel.  

Richmond-Bolton – Rehabilitation of U.S. 2 continues. Motorists can expect moderate interruptions with areas of one-way alternating traffic, Sunday through Thursday 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. between Lemroy Court and the I-89 interchange, and Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. throughout the project. Motorists can also expect to be traveling on some areas of gravel surface between Lemroy Court and Riverview Cemetery. Please slow down. 

Royalton – Construction efforts continue for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment project. Traffic is reduced to one lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Truck drivers need to be aware of a low clearance of 12-1” at the railroad overpass. 

Stowe – The VT Route 100/West Hill Road Intersection new signal is in operation as of 06/23. There will be some final wrap up items this week that could involve a lane closure and the use of flaggers. 

VT 108 (Mountain Road) will be closed just west of its intersection with Weeks Hill Road beginning 06/27 at 7:00 a.m. for a culvert replacement. Traffic will be directed along a local route using Weeks Hill Road and Cape Cod Road. VT 108 will then reopen by 6:00 p.m. on 06/29. Please plan accordingly. 

Stowe-Cambridge – A parking and picnic area improvement project is underway along Scenic VT 108 “The Notch” between Stowe and Cambridge. Motorists may encounter periods of one-way alternating traffic on this route as crews work on different sites throughout the Notch. Remember, no tractor trailers allowed. 

Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. The bridge is closed for construction. Two signed detour routes are in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south. 

Waterbury – Work on the Downtown Main Street project continues. Travelers may encounter periods of alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 (Main Street) starting midweek with some sidewalk closures as crews prep new sidewalks and curbs. 

Williston – Expect a long-term lane shift on U.S. 2 between Gregory Drive, So. Burlington and Adams Court, Williston.  Flaggers will be present allowing for construction vehicles in/out of the work areas with minimal impact to motorists. Temporary lane shifts will be in place within the area of sidewalk installation. 

Williston Park and Ride – Construction of a new park and ride facility along VT 2A continues. One-way alternating traffic will be required on VT 2A between 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Please use caution when traveling through the project area. Expect delays. 

Wilmington-Brattleboro –A resurfacing project is underway on VT 9. Motorists can expect moderate traffic delays and alternating one-way traffic in Marlboro as crews continue paving VT 9, side roads, and driveway aprons. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
