Road closed due to huge building fire near Coventry

A road has been closed and 40 firefighters called following reports of a severe fire near Coventry. Crews were called to Holly Lane earlier today (Wednesday, May 24).


Firefighters were first called to the scene shortly after 9.10am. A derelict building was found to be ablaze, confirmed West Midlands Fire Service.

Two hose reels and two main jets are being used to extinguish the blaze in Balsall Common. Holly Lane has been closed to the public with people told to avoid the nearby vicinity.

Operations scaled down on Holly Lane

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the severe fire on Holly Lane in Balsall Common.

Operations will also be scaled down throughout the evening (Wednesday, May 24).

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: ‘We continue to scale down operations as we bring the response phase of this incident to conclusion.

‘Our crews will remain on scene this evening (May 24) and then conduct periodic revisits to the scene as we monitor for hotspots. Our investigation into the cause is underway.’

Smoke has begun to clear on Holly Lane

Smoke has started to clear on Holly Lane, confirmed West Midlands Fire Service.

A spokesman said at 4.30pm: ‘Good progress is being made at this incident and we have scaled down to five fire engines at the scene.

‘A main jet and a hose reel continue to be used to damp down, which is expected to take some time due to the size of the fire. Extensive smoke logging at the property has also begun to clear.

‘Holly Lane remains closed to the public. We are hoping to re-open the road as soon as possible.’

Crews called from Kenilworth Fire Station

A total of eight fire engines and a 4×4 Brigade Response Vehicle are currently at the scene in Balsall Common.

A fire engine from Kenilworth Fire Station has also been called, confirmed West Midlands Fire Service.

Two hose reels and two main jets are being used to extinguish the fire at a derelict building on Holly Lane.

Traffic ‘building’ on Holly Lane

Drivers have been advised to find an alternative route and plan ahead as traffic currently remains ‘slow’ between B4101 Balsall Street and Frog Lane.

A post on Inrix reads: ‘Holly Lane in both directions closed, slow traffic due to building fire between B4101 Balsall Street East and Frog Lane.’

Crews are continuing the extinguish the huge fire which has seen Holly Road closed since around 11.30am.
