Bristol City transfers recap: Jason Knight latest, Alex Scott updates

Hello and welcome to Friday’s live blog as we can close off another successful week for Bristol City in the post-season period before the players return to training in 10 days.

Haydon Roberts has been added to the squad to make it three new additions for the summer while the Robins are keen on making Jason Knight No4, although getting the midfielder out of Derby County could prove challenging.

Elsewhere, as reported yesterday, Kane Wilson increasingly looks like he could move on this summer while the endless speculation around Alex Scott continues.

We’ll be bringing you all the Robins-related news throughout the day plus anything of interest in the Championship, so keep an eye on below for updates

That’s all from us today

We’re not expecting anything to happen later on today so we’re closing this blog down for the evening.

Thanks for reading and have a pleasant weekend, one and all!

Manchester United’s retained list

The headline names on this list are either two pricey in terms of their likely wage expectations and/or don’t conform to City’s transfer model regarding potential resale. But, just for your own interest, Manchester United have today released seven players:

  • Phil Jones
  • Azel Tuanzebe
  • Ethan Galbraith
  • Di’Shon Bernard
  • Eric Hanbury
  • Charlie Wellens
  • Manni Norkett

Australia U23s lose to Panama

City forward Marlee Francois was an unused substitute as Australia U23s were beaten 2-1 by Panama this afternoon in the semi-finals of the Maurice Revello Tournament.

Francois had scored in their final group game but was left on the bench and watched as Davis White cancelled out Noah Botic’s opener for Australia before Panama’s Reyniel Perdomo scored the winner two minutes from the end.

Oh City, why do you toy with us?

This is going to get everyone going then…

Bears switch to O’Neills

Reaction to City’s change from Hummel to O’Neills has been, ahem, mixed to say the least. The Irish manufacturer took over in March, due to supply issues and have signed a multi-year contract.

Perhaps not unsurprisingly they have now replaced Umbro to make all the Bears kits moving forward.

Joe Wollacott on the market

South London Press are reporting that Charlton Athletic are “open to offers” for former City academy goalkeeper Joe Wollacott as he’s lost his place in the Addicks starting XI.

The Ghana international was ever-present between the sticks under Ben Garner and then suffered a broken finger which ruled him out of the World Cup and by the time he returned, Dean Holden was in charge with Ashley Maynard-Brewer the No1.

Wollacott, who left City on a permanent basis in 2021 to sign for Swindon Town after never making a first-team appearance, still has two years to run on his contract at The Valley.

Slightly stating the obvious re: Jason Knight

There’s been no obvious development over the last 24 hours but worth bearing in mind that Knight is away with the Republic of Ireland squad as they play in Greece tonight before flying to Dublin in preparation for Monday’s game against Gibraltar.

It would seem unikely (albeit not totally impossible) for any kind of transfer to be concluded until after then. It’s plausible but just a bit logistically messy and, ultimately, uneccessary given the whole summer is in front of us.

Just as a small note, interesting that Knight would have already had a first-hand look at the HPC having been part of the Ireland squad which trained at Failand last month for four days.

More trouble for Reading

The Royals are no longer in the Championship but having been relegated due to the six-point penalty imposed for failing to stick to a business plan after previous Profit & Sustainability issues, they’ve now been charged with multiple breaches of EFL Regulations surrounding three occasions where they’ve failed to pay players wages on time.

The club have until Thursday, June 29 to respond to the charges.

Departure at QPR

Lee Ferdinand has left his role as director of football at QPR. He’d been in the job for eight years but had come under increasingly pressure following the Rs struggles last season as they fell from the promotion places towards the relegation zone.

Southampton’s retained list

It was published yesterday evening just after we knocked off but one of the Championship’s six new teams have confirmed they’re releasing two senior players in Theo Walcott and Mohamed Elyounoussi.

A further 10 youth-team players are also leaving on expiry of their contracts at the end of this month, including Bristolian centre-back Will Tizzard who was signed by Saints when he was just nine and playing for Coalpit Heath.

Congratulations to Jason Euell

The City coach has been studying for his LMA Diploma in Professional Studies (Football Management) through the University of Liverpool.

Mark Sykes on Ireland duty

The Republic of Ireland play Greece in Athens tonight with the hosts managed by former Chelsea midfielder and Brighton boss Gus Poyet.

There’s a chance Mark Sykes could be involved although the City utility man is likely to start the game (kick-off: 7:45pm) on the bench.

Ireland lost their opening Euro 2024 qualifier 1-0 to France in March.

Conway in action for Scotland U21s

There’s not much around in the way of reaction but Tommy Conway captained the Scotland U21 team yesterday evening as they drew 0-0 with Norway in Spain.

The Robins striker played 60 minutes of the friendly and you can read a match report via the Scottish FA HERE
