President Joe Biden visit to Greenwich today heightens police presence
GREENWICH — President Joe Biden will make a brief visit to town on Friday after attending a gun safety summit at the University of Hartford.
The president is expected to attend a fundraising dinner at the home of donor Stephen F. Mandel in Greenwich’s Midcountry, near Lake Avenue, on Friday evening. Tickets for the event start at $25,000 each and Gov. Ned Lamont is set to attend.
Funds raised during the dinner will support Biden’s bid for reelection in the 2024 presidential race.
There will be road closures in the area, but the Greenwich Police Department has not disclosed any specifics to ensure presidential security. GPD also warned that there would be a heightened police presence in town on Friday.
“Greenwich Police Department recognizes that sudden and unexpected road closures can cause inconvenience and delay travel,” Deputy Chief Mark Zuccerella said in a statement. “The department is working with partner law enforcement agencies to reduce the impact that this may have on our community.”
Biden is expected to travel from Hartford to Westchester County Airport in New York before being driven to Greenwich for the fundraiser.
While Biden is in Greenwich, local police will be partially responsible for providing security at the town’s expense.
During his weekly radio call-in show on WGCH, First Selectman Fred Camillo said he would like to see the town get reimbursed for providing security during the presidential visit.
“These guys come in here, both Republicans and Democrats, and we have to provide security, you know making sure things are OK, and we don’t get reimbursed,” he said Friday morning.
“We would love to see in the future, President Biden comes in here and he pulls in a couple of million dollars, that they would go to the towns helping provide for that money. … It taxes the budget.”
Greenwich has long been a Republican stronghold in blue Connecticut, but the Democrats have recently gained ground.
Democrats have outnumbered Republicans on Greenwich voter rolls since 2021 and for the first time last year, Democrats took control of the town’s three state House seats.
