Manchester United were the first victors of the newly branded Premier League in 1992/93 – with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side claiming glory ahead of second-place Aston Villa.

The Red Devils stormed to the title after picking up 84 points from their 42 matches, losing just six times in the process. They topped the table above Villa, Norwich, Blackburn and Queens Park Rangers, who made up the top-five. Liverpool finished sixth, while Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest were all relegated.

This proved to be Ferguson’s first league title in charge of United after taking over in 1986 following a year as the boss of Scotland’s national team. It took the Scot a couple of years to put his blueprint on the Red Devils, but once he did, United became a force to be reckoned with across Europe.

Ferguson made them into superpowers and the success of the 92/93 campaign started it all off. But that season didn’t start well at all. United lost their first two matches against Sheffield United and Everton, before drawing against Ipswich – a run that saw some fans call for Ferguson to be sacked.

However, United started to motor after their last-minute 1-0 win at Southampton – and the Red Devils won their next four games, with Mark Hughes scoring twice in that run. Ferguson’s men then went through another rough patch, failing to win in seven, but managed to pick up the pace coming into mid-November.

A 3-0 victory over Oldham kickstarted a 10-game unbeaten run and the Red Devils climbed to the top of the Premier League table from there. They were knocked off top spot heading into April but managed to regain it by winning their last seven matches to claim their first title under Ferguson.

It a monumental season for the Red Devils and Ferguson, who won another 12 Premier League titles before retiring from the dugout in 2013. He managed to win every major honour available to him, including the Champions League as they won the Treble in 1999 by beating Bayern Munich.

But to mark Ferguson’s first title in 1992/93, The Mirror have produced Fergie’s First, a special edition charting that stunning campaign. We look back at the historic season, the players who made it possible, THAT dramatic Sheffield Wednesday game at Old Trafford, which saw the birth of Fergie Time after Steve Bruce’s two late goals, and the celebrations that followed their Premier League glory.
