TRURO, N.S. — The Cougar Dome Board – the Cobequid Society for Athletic Excellence (CSAE), recently announced the introduction of a new Youth Participation Bursary program to support inclusive sport and activity at the Cougar Dome.

With the help of several local schools, the CSAE initiated a nomination process to identify students who would benefit most from the bursaries. The bursary program is made possible by generous financial support from companies such as Kohl-tech Windows and Doors, and Inglis Jewellers. Other organizations are invited to get involved to increase the number of kids and families who will benefit from the program.

The schools nominated young students based on three key categories: students demonstrating academic or athletic excellence were to be recognized for their achievements; students from traditionally marginalized groups such as African Nova Scotians, Indigenous people, 2SLGTBQIA+ individuals, immigrants and newcomers, and persons with disabilities; and students facing financial obstacles to participate in community sports.

The first eight recipients were selected from elementary and middle schools in the area and have now been awarded sports bursaries worth $1,000 each. They will receive a year of free tennis lessons and programming at the Cougar Dome. This not only provides them with an opportunity to develop their athletic abilities, but also promotes social interaction, physical play, and active fun – crucial elements in an era dominated by technology.

The goals of the bursary program are focused and far-reaching. Firstly, CSAE aims to create an inclusive and welcoming environment at the Cougar Dome, embracing diversity and ensuring all individuals, including those from the local indigenous community and visible minorities, feel valued and supported. By fostering a safe and accessible space, the program encourages unity while celebrating the unique identities of each participant.

Secondly, CSAE seeks to empower youth by improving their physical fitness, strength, and coordination through participation in sports. By gaining foundational sports skills and striving for higher levels of performance, students learn the value of commitment and perseverance, enabling them to achieve their personal goals. Moreover, engagement in sports has proven to enhance social skills, resilience, and overall well-being, contributing to the holistic development of the participants.

The CSAE hopes these young individuals will all benefit from their involvement in the program over the coming year. The CSAE continues to promote excellence, inclusivity, and youth development within Truro-Colchester and is looking forward to working with them as they embark on a journey of learning, growth, and athletic achievement at the Cougar Dome.
