Enormous Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud is the talk of Dartmouth

An impressive cruise ship from Norway has turned heads in Dartmouth this afternoon after being spotted in the harbour. MS Maud is passenger ship that embarks regularly on spectacular voyages to the remotest locations on the planet.

It arrived in Darmouth today at approximately 5.30am, according to Marine Traffic after leaving the Scilly Isles yesterday. It’s now on its way to Dover and is expected to arrive at 8.15am tomorrow.

It was seen in Dartmouth last year as well on the same route to Dover. Formerly known as MS Midnastsol, the 19-year old cruise ship is operated by Hurtigruten Expeditions and named after one of the most famous polar vessels of all time, Roald Amundsen’s Maud.

It was built just after the turn of the 21st century and its home port is in Tromso, Norway. The facilities on board the passenger ship include cabins and public areas, a science centre, restaurants, alongside wellness and relaxation areas.

She also had her namesake in Hurtigruten Expedition’s 1925 flagship, DS Dronning Maud (DS Queen Maud). Today, MS Maud is equipped with advanced technology that makes her exceptionally well-suited for expedition cruises in Norway and the British Isles.

Her bright interiors are appointed in a classic Art Deco style. Guests can channel their inner scientist in the advanced Science Center and enjoy daily lectures in the lecture hall or in the comfort of their cabin with our new streaming service. On board is a number of restaurants, an Explorer Lounge and Bar, outdoor observation deck and gym and sauna with stunning views.

The ship can carry 528 passengers and is 446ft long. MS Maud originally joined the Hurtigruten Expeditions fleet in 2003 and instantly proved popular with guests who cruised aboard her on voyages to Antarctica and the Arctic. However, with a desire to embrace new ‘green’ technology, Hurtigruten felt the ship needed to be re-engineered to sail using hybrid power, thus drastically cutting emissions.

At the same, the Norwegian cruise operator wanted to take the opportunity to enhance the onboard environment so it was more in-keeping with their two new ships, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen. As such, MS Maud boasts a range of new accommodation options and amenities.

There’s even an onboard expedition team.
