Every Championship player released so far as Middlesbrough target new faces

With Middlesbrough’s Championship status now confirmed for another season after Wednesday’s disappointing defeat to Coventry City, the club can now press ahead with recruitment plans for the summer ahead.

With obvious ambitions to strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad ready for another push for promotion next term, Carrick had been planning with club recruitment officials for many months with the summer in mind, admitting that until Boro’s fate was sealed the club were having to prepare for two eventualities.

With Boro missing out on promotion in the end, however, there is now clarity for Boro in terms of what they will be recruiting for, and the budgets they will have with which to do that. But the club proved last summer that good players can be picked up on free transfers too, with backup goalkeeper Liam Roberts arriving on a free, as did, more significantly, Darragh Lenihan.
