Hammer-wielding Wolverhampton landlord smashed into tenants’ house and threw belongings out window

Hammer-wielding Wolverhampton landlord smashed into tenants’ house and threw belongings out window

A cruel landlord smashed into his tenants’ house with a hammer before making a threat and throwing their belongings out the window. Inderjit Singh Ghuman broke into their address on the night of November 4, 2021, before one of the tenants escaped. His two tenants were left homeless by his actions and one required hospital treatment.

The defendant, of Byrne Road in Wolverhampton, began harassing his two tenants the previous month where he gained access to the property they shared and changed the locks. During this incident, the 39-year-old arrived at the house with two men who behaved in an aggressive and abusive manner towards one tenant, pushing him out of the property and damaging his vehicle.

The tenant reported the incident to police. Ghuman had failed to follow the correct legal process in repossessing property and was warned it was a criminal offence to illegally evict someone.

Council officers warned that an injunction and power of arrest may be obtained from court. However Ghuman continued to cause problems and he claimed he had sold the house, telling his tenants he was going to remove their possessions.

They later discovered that a number of their personal items had gone missing. Wolverhampton Council subsequently obtained an interim injunction against Ghuman for his behaviour.

But during the night of November 4, 2021, he used a hammer to break into the tenants’ property and made threats before being arrested. One victim needed hospital treatment after jumping out of the window to escape, cutting the back of his left heel, toes of his right foot and his hands – adding to an injury sustained on his shin when Ghuman tripped with the hammer.
