Manchester United transfer news LIVE build up to Man Utd vs Fulham as two players won’t start

Manchester United know a win over Fulham this afternoon will secure a third-place finish to further cement Erik ten Hag’s maiden season as a successful one.

It’s been a memorable year for Reds fans with victories over Manchester City, Liverpool and Barcelona as well as a League Cup trophy lift in February. A cup double is still on with City awaiting in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

United were given an injury boost ahead of Fulham’s visit as Luke Shaw participated in training in the lead-up to the match having come off with an injury at half-time in midweek.

Meanwhile, the Dutchman has said that Marcus Rashford intends to renew his United contract with negotiations still ongoing. He has just 12 months left on his current deal, but the club are confident that an agreement can be struck.

TODAY’S BIG TALKING POINT: What should United’s front three be next season? Have your say by clicking here.

Cole on Haaland breaking his Premier League goal record

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole won’t lose a second of sleep over his Premier League goal record being broken by Erling Haaland this season.

The Manchester City summer signing has surpassed Cole’s 34 goal tally in 1993/94 which – until this campaign – had stood alongside Alan Shearer’s tally in 1995. Haaland has 35 in 36 league outings, with his goals firing City to a fifth Premier League title under Pep Guardiola’s management.

It’s been a long time coming in the top flight, but Cole’s effort with Newcastle United is no longer the target. Given the incredible nature of his first year with City, the sky seems the limit for Haaland who – no doubt – will want to go even better next season. As for the man he has overtaken, though, Cole insists he is not bothered.

Exciting Amad prediction made

Manchester United prospect Amad Diallo has rediscovered the confidence needed to succeed at the highest level following his loan spell at Sunderland.

That’s the view of Black Cats’ sporting director Kristjaan Speakman. Amad has spent the campaign in the Championship at the Stadium of Light. It was a successful spell for the 20-year-old who scored 14 goals in 42 games in all competitions as Tony Mowbray’s side reached the Championship play-offs.

The season ultimately ended on a disappointing note as Sunderland lost out in the semi-finals to Luton Town as their hopes of a Premier League return were dashed. The Hatters have gone on to make it to the top flight after a penalty shootout win at Wembley over Coventry City on Saturday.

Amad headed to Sunderland on the back of an up and down spell at Rangers in the second half of last season and Speakman believes the forward’s all-round game was evident in the north east.

Pundits give verdict on United vs Fulham clash

United end their Premier League campaign this afternoon when they host Fulham at Old Trafford.

United can finish third in the table should they match or better Newcastle’s result against Chelsea. Erik ten Hag’s team are two points ahead of Eddie Howe’s outfit going into the final day’s action.

It has also been a successful season for United. Silverware has been claimed in Ten Hag’s maiden campaign as boss and he could add to it with the FA Cup final to come next weekend.

But for now, all focus is on the last day of the Premier League season.

Here’s what pundits Chris Sutton, Mark Lawrenson and Paul Merson have had to say about the clash at Old Trafford this afternoon.

Ten Hag sends Dan Gore and Kobbie Mainoo first-team messages

Yeah they did well [in first-team training] They deserved it and that is always what has to be the case.

Like Alejandro Garnacho, [who won the Jimmy Murphy award] last season, you see the path is open but they have to deserve their position.

I hope this trophy will motivate them and stimulate them to bring more because that is necessary if you want to get a place in the first team, the first squad, of this club.

OPINION: Ten Hag has clear Antony replacement amid injury concern

It’s a cruel way for Antony’s debut season to end, if his injury is indeed deemed serious. That seemed to be the general consensus when he went down in agony following Trevoh Chalobah’s tackle in Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Chelsea on Thursday.

He was distraught when taken off on a stretcher before the clock ticked 30. Erik ten Hag was equally as concerned, saying that he would be assessed but the picture didn’t look good. It’s probable he will miss next week’s FA Cup final with Manchester City.

The question then turns to who fills the void for both that game but firstly, against Fulham this afternoon.

Ten Hag’s exciting message on Rashford’s future

There’s a lot of room for improvement in his game. I’m convinced he can score even more.

When you take, for instance, the last 10 games he didn’t score many goals. I think only two or three, so yes he can improve. I am happy from what he did last season to now that he brings himself back.

We supported him where we could, with the way we play but also in his mental mindset. We are happy with that, but we must push him more. I think he’s capable of to score 40 goals in a season. So for him that’s the next step.

OPINION: United fans could say goodbye to three players vs Fulham

Regular matchday attendees at Old Trafford could bid farewell to some Manchester United players on what might be their final appearances in the famous red shirt at the Theatre of Dreams.

United face a big summer transfer window as they seek to reduce a gap which currently stands at 17 points to Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. The business done in the next couple of months will have a big say in that becoming a reality.

Securing a new centre-forward is a clear priority for Ten Hag this summer. Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen are top of the list in terms of targets.

Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Declan Rice of West Ham United are also admired. It is clear that midfield is another area of the squad that Ten Hag wants to reinforce.

To bring in players of this calibre will demand serious funding and money which United are unlikely to have ready to go for this summer’s transfer kitty. Members of the current squad who are under contract beyond this summer will no doubt have to be sold to bring funds in.

Ten Hag’s message ahead of FA Cup final week

When I was here one year ago I said we wanted to win trophies. We have won one so we want to go for the highest,” said Ten Hag.

It is a long way and is going to be a project. It is not over one year. We talk two or three years. But when there’s an opportunity to win a trophy, for every player it’s massive.

I have to count but there are not so many players in our squad who have won the FA Cup. An FA Cup is huge. For everyone in the world there is one Champions League, there is one so many titles, but when the FA Cup is all over the world, it’s global wide, a huge reputation.

I know from the Netherlands how big the FA Cup is. So we have an opportunity to win it. We are also realistic that it’s not going to be easy. But I can assure you one thing we will give everything that’s in our power to get the cup.

United can secure £2.2m boost with win vs Fulham

Champions League football may be secured but there is still a couple of million at stake tomorrow afternoon.

United beat Fulham in November’s reverse fixture thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Alejandro Garnacho.

Three points this time will also be significant in its own right.

Erik ten Hag confirms United duo won’t start vs Fulham

Erik ten Hag has named two players who will not start against Fulham this afternoon.

United know a win over the Cottagers will earn a third-place finish after securing a Champions League spot in Thursday’s 4-1 win over Chelsea.

Ten Hag says he is approaching the game as seriously as any other, despite the low jeaopardy attached ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final with Manchester City.

Rashford contract update

Erik ten Hag has confirmed Marcus Rashford wishes to agree a new deal as negotiations progress.

The attacker only has 12 months remaining on his current deal but United are confident that terms can soon be finalised.

Rashford is enjoying his best scoring season ever, becoming the first United player to score 30 goals in a season since Robin van Persie a decade ago.
