Live updates as teenage girl’s body found in Carr Mill Dam

The body of a teenage girl has been found following a huge emergency search at Carr Mill Dam.

A large police presence was been reported at Carr Mill Dam in St Helens, from around 1pm, today on Thursday, June 1.

Witnesses in the area claimed to have seen a police or ambulance helicopter also hovering above the water.

Merseyside Police Chief Inspector for St Helens Paul Holden confirmed the body of a teenage girl has now been found.

Police confirm the body of a teenage girl has been found

Police have confirmed the body of a teenage girl has been found following a huge emergency search at Carr Mill Dam earlier today.

Merseyside Police, paramedics and the fire service were called to the scene at Carr Mill Dam on Garswood Old Road, St Helens at around 12.30pm today (June 1) after receiving a report of a concern for the safety of a teenage girl.

Merseyside Police Chief Inspector for St Helens Paul Holden confirmed that the body of a teenage girl has now been found.

Search and rescue units leave the scene

The search and rescue units have left the scene.

Our reporter Charlotte said fire crews are also preparing to leave.

‘Always people swimming in warm weather’

A family who live near Carr Mill Dam told our reporter Charlotte that there is always people swimming there in warm weather.

They added they were shocked to hear the news of the search this afternoon and headed straight over to the dam fearing it could be someone they know.

Police statement shortly

We are in communication with Merseyside Police’s press office and are expecting an update on this ongoing incident immenently.

All paths blocked off

Our reporter Charlotte has told us police have surrounded the dam.

All paths have been blocked to stop walkers in the area and officers are advising everyone to avoid the area.

Search team suit up to enter water

Our photographer at Carr Mill Dam has confirmed at least two underwater search units have arrived on the scene.

Access to dam completely blocked

The access to Carr Mill Dam is currently blocked.

Our reporter Aaliyah said the road next to OYO Lakeside Haydock Hotel has been blocked off by a police cordon.

Ambulance service update

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) has confirmed to the ECHO paramedics are in attendance assisting emergency service colleagues.

We hope to get further updates from NWAS later this afternoon.

Cordon extended

Our reporter Aaliyah has said the crowd has dispersed due to an extension of the cordon next to the Toby Carvery pub.

Activity in the water

Search and rescue crews are currently working in the water at Carr Mill Dam.

Images from the scene shows activity also taking place near to the water’s edge.

A cordon has been placed around the area and police are currently restricting access to the dam.

A police cordon is in place near East Lancashire Road, St Helens, outside the Toby Carvery and Carr Mill Dam.

Massive emergency services response

Images from the scene show the police, paramedics and the fire service at the scene.

They are currently stationed in the Toby Carvery car park, near to the water at Carr Mill Dam.

Merseyside fire and rescue service also at the scene

Fire crews are also at the scene, alongside police and paramedics.

Our reporter at the scene said that members of the search and rescue team are also in the water and close to the water’s edge.

Helicopter circling above the dam

A helictoper has also been spotted circling the area, close to the dam.

It is unclear at this moment if it is a police helictoper or an air ambulance.

Police at the scene and restricting access

Police have reportedly been at the scene at Carr Mill Dam, St Helens, since around 1pm this afternoon.

Officers told staff at Toby Carvery, which backs onto the Carr Mill Dam, not to allow people into the back near to the water.
