Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa live updates: Jacob Ramsey scores again, Ollie Watkins misses penalty

Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa live updates: Jacob Ramsey scores again, Ollie Watkins misses penalty

Aston Villa will be hoping to put a stop to four successive defeats at Anfield to ensure they remain in the hunt for a Europa Conference League place.

Unai Emery’s men now appear to be in a shoot-out with Tottenham to land that all-important seventh-place finish. Spurs host Brentford this lunchtime (12.30pm) prior to Villa’s clash at Liverpool (3pm).

Villa need to better Spurs’ points return from their final two games to ensure European football returns to Villa Park for the first time in 23 years.

Ahead of today’s kick-off at Anfield, Villa will be without ex-Liverpool hero Philippe Coutinho who’s been ruled out for the remainder of the season having sustained another injury setback.

For Liverpool, Roberto Firmino is expected to be involved in what will be his final outing at Anfield before leaving on a free transfer this summer. Star striker Darwin Nunez has, however, been ruled out with a toe injury. Red boss Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, will serve a two-match touchline ban for comments he made about referee Paul Tierney. The German will be in the stands for this one.

We’re 10 minutes away from kick-off here. Villa have headed in to get themselves prepared. Brentford beating Spurs this lunchtime will give the players a huge boost prior to kick-off.

Huge result at Tottenham

The Liverpool stadium announcer here has informed the Villa supporters that Brentford are now 3-1 up at Tottenham, much to the delight of the away fans trickling in behind the goal.

Villa (8th) remain level on points with Tottenham (7th), with Spurs ahead on goals scored in the table.

A point this afternoon would be huge for Unai Emery’s men in their quest for European football next season.

Unai Emery rolls the dice

Some interesting changes by the head coach as he freshens up his full-backs by bringing in Matty Cash and Lucas Digne.

It’s Cash’s first start since picking up a calf injury in mid-March while, for Digne, it’s his first since Everton at the back-end of February.

It’s good to see Boubacar Kamara in midfield. He’ll be important as Villa look to add more control to their play this afternoon, while John McGinn will support Cash down Villa’s right-hand side given the threat of Liverpool winger Luis Diaz.

I will ask about Diego Carlos’s omission. It could well be that the Brazilian has picked up a knock, while Calum Chambers hasn’t recovered from his sickness bug which forced him to miss training on Thursday.

Subs as Diego Carlos misses out

Subs: Olsen, Sinisalo, Traore, Buendia, Alex Moreno, A.Young, Duran, Dendoncker.

Calum Chambers hasn’t recovered from sickness bug. Diego Carlos is also missing from 20-man squad.
