Liverpool ‘made aware of Mason Mount preference’ amid Man United transfer fight for MLS star

MLS star wanted
Jürgen Klopp did not narrow down the Liverpool transfer task much when asked where he would be potentially looking to strengthen. The answer: everywhere except the goalkeeper position.
Still, you might have thought this would at least quell the links to new options for Liverpool between the sticks. Not so.
And in fairness, it’s still not beyond the realms of possibility that Liverpool could have to buy a goalkeeper. Klopp seemed pretty adamant that he did not want to lose Caoimhín Kelleher, but if the 24-year-old pushed for a move, it might be a different story.

Perhaps that’s where MLS star Đorđe Petrović comes into the picture. The goalkeeper for the New England Revolution has been catching the eye, and Serbian outlet Nogo Mania reports that he has made it onto the radar of both Liverpool and Manchester United.
At Old Trafford, there is definitely a need for a new stopper, with David de Gea’s form patchy and no adequate back-up, particularly if Dean Henderson moves elsewhere in the summer. Erik ten Hag will also be keen to add someone more comfortable with the ball at his feet.
For Liverpool, Petrović would strictly be an option if Kelleher moved on. But with a scarcely believable +0.47 differential between post-shot expected goals and actual goals conceded per 90 (Alisson’s is +0.22), the MLS star looks like a huge prospect. Benfica is also credited with an interest.

Liverpool aware of Mount preference
It’s happening again, isn’t it? Admittedly, losing out on Mason Mount would be a far less bitter transfer blow than backing out of the race for Jude Bellingham, but once again the picture has seemingly changed after Liverpool initially emerged as favorite.
Previously believed to be leading the charge, it now seems Liverpool could lose out to Manchester United. According to The Athletic, the Chelsea star is ‘leaning’ in that direction, with talks expected in due course — and other interested parties have been informed.
Whether that has anything to do with Champions League status is unclear. In any case, there are still a number of hurdles to overcome; incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino is not thought to be keen on a sale, and personal terms with Manchester United have not been agreed yet either. Meanwhile, the priority for Ten Hag lies further up the pitch.
As such, Liverpool will surely continue to keep an eye on the situation. But what was looking like a pretty likely transfer has now seemingly faded back into ‘long shot’ territory. With Mount appearing to be a great fit for the latest interpretation of Klopp’s twin number eight roles, it would be a shame to miss out — although unlike with Bellingham, there are a reasonable number of legitimate alternatives who would be at least vaguely like-for-like.
