Liverpool are contemplating whether to allow Calvin Ramsay to leave this summer after interest in him emerged from the Championship, according to reports.

Ramsay arrived at Liverpool last year in a £4.2m transfer from Aberdeen. However, due to some injury issues, he is yet to make his Premier League debut. Now, the full-back will be considering what to do in order to get his development back on track.

Liverpool still have Ramsay under contract until 2027. But now, suggestions are emerging that he could spend next season out on loan.

Indeed, the Liverpool Echo has revealed that Preston North End want to sign Ramsay for a season on loan in the Championship.

Preston boss Ryan Lowe was born in Liverpool and is now hoping he can raid the Reds for Ramsay’s services for the upcoming campaign. In turn, he could follow in the footsteps of Sepp van den Berg, who was on loan from Liverpool to Preston between February 2021 and June 2022.

According to the report, Liverpool have not yet decided if they are going to offload Ramsay on loan or not.

The club know they need to ensure Ramsay gets more gametime next season. It could yet be within their own under-21 setup or at a temporary new home.

Should the latter option be favoured, Preston – who finished 12th in the Championship this season – will be hoping to be the ones to benefit.

Liverpool find new cover for Alexander-Arnold

And in turn, Liverpool already have an idea of how to fill the void at right-back. Obviously, Trent Alexander-Arnold remains their main option there, even in the new hybrid midfield role he has been adapting to. But they will still need further cover – especially after allowing James Milner to leave on a free transfer.

According to the Echo, Liverpool’s solution might again come from within their academy. Conor Bradley will return to Liverpool in pre-season after a productive loan spell with Bolton Wanderers.

Bradley is only 19 years old himself, just like Ramsay. However, he might get a chance to show Jurgen Klopp what he can contribute.

Bolton gave Bradley 53 appearances throughout the 2022-23 season, which included them winning the EFL Trophy. Before that, he earned his first five senior appearances with Liverpool.

The amount of gametime he got in League One shows the benefits that a spell in the EFL can have for developing players. Therefore, Ramsay might want to think about dropping to the second tier with Preston.

Only time will tell if that is going to be his only option this summer and whether or not Liverpool will give the green light to the temporary switch.

Considering that Arthur Melo went without a trace and Fabio Carvalho wants to leave too, the fact that a third player Liverpool added last summer might leave as well – even if on a temporary basis – doesn’t paint last summer’s transfer work at Anfield in the best of lights.

But Ramsay might be able to salvage something by learning his trade in the English game more in the second tier. It is now up to Liverpool to decide what to do with him.
