Massachusetts Field Hockey Announces Hiring Of Assistant Coach Holly Turbill

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey and head coach Barb Weinberg announced Holly Turbill has joined the program as an assistant coach.
 
Turbill, who most recently served dual head coaching roles at the Surbiton Hockey Club in Long Ditton, Surrey, England, rounds out the staff with the recent hiring of assistant coach Simon van de Loo.
 
“We’re pleased to welcome Holly to UMass, as she rounds out our staff perfectly,” Weinberg said. “Holly’s experience coaching at the highest levels in the UK, serving in Head of Performance roles and mentoring student-athletes in all aspects of their lives will make her an incredible leader for our players. I look forward to working alongside this talented and dynamic staff!”
 
At Surbiton, Turbill was the U-16 Boys Head Coach and the U-18 Girls Talent Academy Head Coach. In those roles she served as the performance coach for the U-16 Boys, coaching high caliber players, including five junior international players. She helped the team reach the semifinals of the National Cup (TBC). For the U-18 Girls, she worked alongside Giselle Ansley to create the performance environment with England Hockey to develop junior internationals.
 
Also at Surbiton, Turbill served as the Head of Performance Sport/Head of Hockey since September of 2022. In that role, she was charged with running the hockey program for all ages including sport performance and participation. She created an inclusive environment and a learning culture, encouraging players to reflect on performances and behaviors while pushing to achieve their best. She mentored all athletes by offering one-on-one support with regards to scheduling, academics and other external issues. She also introduced a scholar’s program which included strength and conditioning and technical skill sessions in all sports. This season, her program has led Surbiton to three national hockey titles, five hockey players being selected for England, the No. 1 ranking among tennis schools and national titles in rowing, gymnastics and skiing.
 
Prior to Surbiton, Turbill worked at Culford School as the Assistant Director of Sport/Head of Hockey/Head of Girls Soccer from September 2018 – April 2022. She also had roles with Bury (2018) as the Burytown FC U-18 boys lead soccer coach and the Bury Field Hockey Club First Team men’s/women’s lead technical/tactical coach.
 
Turbill was the Shrewsbury School Head of Girls Games (2017-18) and the Brighton College Head of Girls Games and Head of Hockey (2016-17). She began her career at the Milton Abby School as the Head of Hockey/Soccer and the assistant Housemistress, Damer Boys House (2014-16).
 
Turbill attended Denstone College and then the University of Buckingham. Her playing career has included being an Investec National Premier League Hockey Player (Cannock) as well as a Division 1 South Hockey Player (Slough). In soccer, she played for Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Birmingham City Ladies FC. She also was an England Rounders player.
