Tony Cascarino doesn’t think Leicester winger Harvey Barnes is a Champions League-quality player, amid links to Newcastle and Tottenham.

The 25-year-old has been one of the few positives of a dismal season for the Foxes. But, his good performances couldn’t prevent his team’s relegation.

Barnes has proved he has the quality to succeed in the Premier League. However, Cascarino has voiced his concern over a move to Newcastle.

As noted by TEAMtalk, Tottenham and Newcastle have both registered an interest in the winger.

In fact, Spurs and the Magpies are battling for two Leicester stars – Barnes and James Maddison. According to reports, the duo could cost a combined £80m this summer.

This season, Barnes made 34 Premier League appearances, In the process, he scored an impressive 13 goals and made four assists.

The England international’s contract at the King Power is valid until 2025. So, the Foxes aren’t under immediate pressure to sell – unlike with Maddison, who’s deal expires in June 2024.

However, if a sizeable offer is submitted for Barnes, Leicester may well sell him this summer.

Barnes ‘isn’t a Champions League player’

Now, in response to the rumours linking Barnes with a move back to the Premier League, Cascarino has suggested Newcastle and Tottenham should steer clear of signing him.

“Harvey Barnes is slightly different (to Maddison) because he’s a bit one-dimensional, but he gets good numbers,” he told talkSPORT.

“He wants to just go past a fullback and drive into the 18-yard box. He has a nice left foot and he likes hitting things early.

“Again, would you put him in a team that’s in the Champions League? If you are asking for Champions League money, then they have to be in Champions League teams.

“As much as I like Harvey Barnes. I don’t think he is a Champions League player, at this moment.”

With Newcastle set to be competing in the Champions League next season, it will be interesting to see if they do make a move for Barnes.

But, it’s worth noting that Tottenham aren’t in any European competitions next season, so Cascarino’s advice doesn’t really apply to them.

Interestingly, a third Premier League team have recently registered an interest in Barnes, who may prove to be a better fit for the winger.

That is West Ham United. Indeed, reports suggest David Moyes is considering bringing in the Leicester attacker using the funds generated from selling Declan Rice.

So, it seems likely Barnes will make a return to the Premier League. The only question, however, is which of the three teams he will end up at.
