Following what has been a largely inconsistent season for Liverpool, there is much to ponder for manager Jürgen Klopp. However, instead of dwelling on the mistakes of this term, attention must now turn to the future.

Those present at Anfield at the weekend will attest that the scenes following the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa had more than a slight air of an end of an era. With several long-term servants having said their final goodbyes to the Kop, debate as regards who should be signed to replace them is only to be expected.

Liverpool ‘completes’ $76m transfer

One name that has cropped up on multiple occasions as a potential transfer target for Liverpool is a star of the Premier League and one of the standout talents from last year’s World Cup in Qatar. It seems that a deal to take the midfielder in question from Brighton to Liverpool could well be nearing completion.

Of course, the man in question is Alexis Mac Allister, who has emerged as one of the Reds’ top targets ahead of the upcoming transfer window. The 24-year-old is subject to a great deal of interest this summer as a result of his performances in the last year and it appears that a deal to bring him to Anfield is ‘complete’.

According to TyC Sports (translated by Sport Witness), Lionel Messi’s international teammate will join Klopp’s side for a fee of approximately $76m (£61m/€70m). Watch this space…

In many ways, Liverpool’s transfer activity last summer appeared a bit kamikaze at times, with the club failing to sign any permanent alternatives after missing out on its top targets. This time around, however, there cannot be room for any complacency, especially given the Reds’ mixed results this season.

Clearly, Klopp’s squad requires major surgery if it is to challenge treble-chasing Manchester City next season and it would not be an exaggeration to suggest that Liverpool could need upwards of five signings. However, it is not just new signings that need to be secured in the coming months, with stars including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk soon to enter the final two years of their respective deals.

On top of this, uncertainty regarding the Reds’ current back-up options may need to be solved once and for all, with Klopp having enough issues to solve in his squad as it is. A crucial summer beckons at Anfield.
