North Liverpool sports pitches earmarked for expansion

Sports pitches at a north Liverpool leisure centre have been earmarked for expansion.

A planning application has been lodged with Liverpool Council for existing recreational outdoor pitches at Croxteth sports and wellbeing centre on Altcross Road to be made bigger. Essential works to accompany the expansion would also be carried out.

According to a design and access statement, the development is bounded by a pub and shops opposite Croxteth Park Care Home with recreational and community facilities surrounding. Homes are facing non-directly on the further southern and western side.

The plan would make amendments to the fencing around the two existing outdoor pitches at the back of the sports centre, which contains a sports hall, squash courts, gym and studio, to make them more accessible to the community. The design statement added: “The design proposal is built to enclose the outdoor sports field to protect both the audiences and players that are within or outside the cage.”

If and once approval has been granted it is envisaged that the project will commence in later this year and be completed within 12 months. The contractor will be instructed to work within reasonable hours 8.30am – 5.00pm weekdays and should they require to undertake any weekend work or disturbance, the contractor will have to notify residents of any disruption.

According to designs attached to the application by Smith.Young (CORR) the fencing would expand to 7.25m with no changes to parking or vehicle access on Altcross Road. The report said: “The concept of the detail and materials is to keep the detailing simple, a small palette of materials, facing blockwork and steel poles to provide adequate protection without challenging surrounding context.”
