Norwich City: Target Max Johnston on transfer tussle
The Canaries remain in the race to sign the Motherwell right-back as he approaches the end of his deal at Fir Park after impressing this season. He is free to sign for a compensation figure during this transfer window.
Johnston has held talks with Norwich and it’s understood he visited their Colney training base prior to the end of the season – but strong interest has arrived in the 19-year-old subsequently.
Norwich are battling with Premier League, Championship and clubs from abroad for his signature this summer and Johnston has admitted the frenzy surrounding his next move has been surreal.
“I still don’t know what the future holds,” Johnston told the Daily Record from a training base.
“There has been a lot of interest from clubs from the English Premier League and Championship, Portugal, Serie A and the Bundesliga.
“I have spoken with a few clubs and others have spoken with my agent. It has been mental, so much so that I have tried to stay off social media, but it is near impossible when my pals tag me into everything, when I have been linked with different teams.”
Having enjoyed a breakthrough season under Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell, Johnston’s priority is to continue his development through regular first-team football.
Norwich have added right-back Jack Stacey to their ranks already but Max Aarons is expected to depart the club in this window with Jose Mourinho’s Roma a reported suitor for his services.
The Canaries package is seen as a viable one – but it remains to be seen whether they can edge ahead of the competition to sign the Scotland under 21 international.
Johnston is expected to make his decision on his next club in the coming weeks, with Norwich continuing to stake their claim to his representatives.
“It has always been about playing football for me,” Johnston said. “Wherever I go next season I want to push on again. I want to get the highest level I can. I don’t want to go to a club and pick up a decent wage but having very little chance of first-team football.
“I want to learn, develop and progress. I want to go to a club where I know if I can do well that I will get a run in the first-team.
“I know you are never guaranteed to play but I want to give myself the best opportunity to do that. It is then up to me to push and win a jersey.”
