Patch Wins 9 NH Press Association Distinguished Journalism Awards

MANCHESTER, NH — Patch in New Hampshire won nine awards for news, videos, and photography in 2022 at the NH Press Association annual banquet on Thursday.

Tony Schinella, Patch’s only local editor in the state, won five awards, including first place in the Spot News category for “Retired Concord Couple Missing, Found Murdered,” three stories published on Concord NH Patch in 24 hours about the murders of Djeswende and Stephen Reid, and “New Hampshire Schools Hit With ‘Active Shooter’ Hoaxes: Watch” in the Best Use of Video category on Concord NH Patch. He also received second place for “Dead Body Found In Merrimack River,” concerning the death of Katie Gorfinkle, published on Concord NH Patch; second place for Government Reporting with “NH Legislative Garage Project Could Be A Windfall For Developers,” also published on the Concord site; and third place in Best Use of Video category for “Former WWF Wrestler Saves 125 Acres Of Farmland In Milford: Watch,” published on Milford NH Patch.

Hastings won first place in the General News Photo category for a photo of a bear on Bedford NH Patch (“Black Bear Strolls Through Downtown Manchester, Climbs Tree In Park”) and third place for General News Photo for “Honoring 9/11 Victims” also published on Bedford NH Patch. He also won third place for Crime & Court Reporting on Bedford NH Patch for “New Jersey Man, Who Murdered 2 In Bedford, Sentenced To Life In Prison” and third place for Best Use of Video for “K-9 Niko” published on Londonderry NH Patch (“Specially Trained K-9 Helps Task Force Fight Child Abuse Images”).

Hastings also received three awards for spot news photo, two awards for photo essay, and one for sports photography, photos that were published on his own website.

Both Schinella and Hastings submit entries in the Class II category for freelancers or organizations with less than four employees in the state.

Other news partners with Patch also won several awards for last year’s news coverage.

InDepthNH also won half a dozen awards, including Feature Writing by Paula Tracy “John Harrigan has died”; Garry Rayno for Columnist of the Year for his “Distant Dome” opinion pieces; Arnie Alpert, another contributor, who also won a Columnist of the Year award; sports reporting by George Liset, who publishes Writing on the Fly, columns about fishing; Wayne King, who won for Best Audio or Podcast; and Donald Kreis for community service for his Power to the People columns.

Roger Wood, a broadcast journalist for more than five decades, who produced podcasts for InDepthNH, was also given a lifetime achievement award.

New Hampshire Bulletin, which also produces stories Patch publishes, won several awards, including “Banned Books Week” by Ethan DeWitt, which won in the General News Story category; DeWitt for spot news for a New Hampshire first-in-the-nation primary piece; Annmarie Timmins for a Health Reporting story about a 24-week abortion ban; Amanda Gokee for a local impact story focusing on climate change; Gokee, for a story about the closure of Gunstock; the mid-term election coverage by both Timmins and DeWitt; and General Excellence.

InDepthNH and New Hampshire Bulletin also submit their entries in the Class II category.
