Rutland League cricket round-up

Dan Hughes hit two superb knocks as Ketton Sports suffered mixed fortunes in back-to-back games.

Hughes was part of a 130-run eighth wicket partnership which helped propel Sports to victory in their Rutland League match on Sunday.

He came together with Freddie Renton with Sports on 156-8 in their Division Two tussle with Whittlesey at Pit Lane.

Hughes hit an unbeaten 81 while Renton made 19 as Ketton closed their innings on 294-9 after 45 overs.

Openers Mat Bird (38) and Xavier Wildsmith (76) had earlier given Sports a solid foundation with an 88-run first wicket stand.

Whittlesey were then bowled out for 153 in their reply as Nick Roche took 3-15 from his four-over spell.

Hughes was again Sports’ star turn 24 hours later as they lost a high-scoring Stamford Shield quarter-final clash with Ufford Park on Monday night.

The in-form batsman hit 14 fours and four sixes in his 109 as Sports scored 193-7 from their 20 overs. Opener Bird had earlier made 29.

However, Ufford were able to pass the challenging target with five balls to spare as Tom Cooper led their charge.

Cooper cracked eight sixes and six fours in his 79 while Ibrahim Javed made 33 and Sudheer Jafar 23 to secure their place in the last eight.

Burghley Park’s reign as Stamford KO Shield holders was ended as Peterborough Town gained revenge for last season’s final defeat.

The holders were beaten by nine runs at Bretton Gate as Peterborough joined Ufford Park, Market Deeping and Newborough in the last four.

The hosts had been bowled out for 170 after batting first with Mo Azhar taking 4-33 and Daniel Costello claiming 3-26 for Burghley.

Pat Harrington led the Burghley reply with 55 while Ryan Gilmour made 30 and Peter Foster added a further 27.

However, Peterborough wrestled back control of the contest with Bash Hussain’s 4-28 helping secure their success.

Deeping were six-run winners in a close contest with near neighbours Bourne.

They had batted first and made 144-7 from their 20 overs with Joe Malton (44) and Ashar Hafeez (31) their top scorers.

Azizullah Sharifi then struck a crucial 26 not out in the latter stages of the home innings which would prove pivotal.

Corey Young had taken three wickets for Bourne whose run chase fell agonisingly short on 138-7.

Sam Evison top-scored with 46 while Carl Wilson added 24 with Jordan Temple and Young unbeaten on 20 and 16 not out at the close. James Hook, Hafeez and Josh Smith all took two wickets each for Deeping.

Market Deeping had conceded their Division One clash at Werrington on Sunday and have subsequently withdrawn from the Rutland League.

Uppingham went down by six wickets in their Division One match at reigning champions Peterborough.

Charlie Cox hit 42 not out as Town totalled 165-9 from their 45 overs which was passed by Peterborough in less than half that time despite James Cross claiming 2-21 for Uppingham.

Burghley Park were also defeated on their travels as they lost by four wickets at Wisbech Town.

Mark Saunders struck 49 and Dan Costello made 46 before James Biggs blasted an unbeaten 30 as Burghley made 233 after batting first.

Caius Headley took 3-39 in the Wisbech reply but key innings’ from Josh Bowers (78) and Jamie Gollands (73) saw the hosts to victory.

Ufford Park lost by five wickets in their away match at Division Two pacesetters Long Sutton who dismissed their visitors for 191.

Muhammad Sharafat top-scored for Ufford with 30 before Sutton passed their target with five overs to spare.

Stamford were knocked off top spot in Division Three after a three-wicket reversal at Kimbolton.

They were bowled out for 169 with Kimbolton needing less than 29 overs to pass the required target.

Alex Birch (39) and Mark Andrew (36) top-scored for Stamford while Chris Birch and Sam Clarke both claimed three wickets in the Kimbolton reply.

City 2nds are the new leaders after beating their Uffington counterparts by 189 runs at Woodlands.

Finn Bray took 4-44 as City racked up 356-7 after batting first with the villagers being bowled out for 167 despite the efforts of JJ Harrison (65no) and Dean Cornish (52).

Bourne were beaten by three wickets in their Division Three clash with Castor at the Abbey Lawn.

They were bowled out for 96 after electing to bat first with visitors passing the required target in 22 overs.

Jordan Temple top-scored with 30 for the hosts while Corey Young and Harrison Elliott picked up a wicket apiece in the Castor reply.

Ufford Park 2nds avenged the fortunes of their first team with a 90-run win against Long Sutton 2nds in Division Four East.

Danny Harrington hit 48 as Ufford made 152 before fine spells from Ryan Linney (5-38) and Jan Neville (4-15) helped skittle Sutton for 62.
