Scotland squad announcement LIVE as John Souttar and Kevin Nisbet earn recalls for Norway and Georgia showdown

Scotland squad announcement LIVE as John Souttar and Kevin Nisbet earn recalls for Norway and Georgia showdown

Steve Clarke has named his Scotland squad for the upcoming qualifiers.

After beating Spain, Clarke knows a win over Norway then Georgia would put his team in a fantastic position to qualify for Germany 2024, perhaps even as winners of Group A.

And he’s confirmed the players he’ll be taking to a Spanish training camp before heading to Scandinavia next month.

John Souttar’s return to fitness and form for Rangers means he’s back after an injury disrupted season.

Kevin Nisbet has also had fitness problems, but has hit the ground running since making his Hibs return so he’s been called up once again.

He’s joined by Edinburgh rival Lawrence Shankland, whose 28 goals for hearts see him included in the inital squad after being included as a late replacement for the pain game.

John Souttar’s first season at Rangers has been one to forget given he missed most of it through injury and personal tragedy.

But the defender has returned to action with an Old Firm derby goal and has been rewarded with an international return.

His last recall following a long injury layoff resulted in an opening goal against Denmark, so hopefully it;s the same against this time around for the former Hearts man.

Who’s missing?

Norwich City’s Grant Hanley goes off injured

Grant Hanley’s return to the Scotland fold has coincided with our upturn in results over the past few years.

But the Norwich man won’t be invovled this time after suffering a season-ending injury with Norwich City that requied surgery on his Achilles.

Kenny Mclean is also a doubt after going off in the same game, and was ruled out for up to 12 weeks.

Che Adams has missed Southampton’s last three games with a recurring knee injury. It’s hoped he’ll be fit, but Shankland and Nisbet could get their chance if the Saints striker doesn’t make it.

Another capital hitman who could be tasked with gunning down Norway.

Nisbet was brought into the international fold by Clarke, ironically usurping Shankland, who was then still with Dundee United before falling out of favour after a switch to Belgium.

But now the Hibs and hearts rivals could team up in dark blue after impressive seasons, albeit Nisbet missed the first few months through injury.

The Law Shank redemption?

After hitting 28 goals for Hearts this season, Lawrence Shankland is out on his own as their most prolific single-season scorer since John Robertson in the early 90s.

Eyebrows were rasied when the stand-in Jambos skipper was left out for the last round of games, only to then be called up after some withdrawls due to injury. And he almost added a late third in a cameo off the becnh against Spain.

Given his goal tally during his first Tynecastle season, there’s not much more he could have done to be in the intial squad this time around.

The gain in Spain is mainly when we train

Before heading across the North Sea, Scotland will enjoy some warm weather training in Spain.

Clarke was expected to take his squad back to the La Finca resort, just as he did prior to Euro 2020, but Record Sport understands the boss has a different venue in mind.

Whether that pre-Euros trip worked or not is up for debate, but little will be left to chance as he eyes successive Euros qualification, which isn’t something many Scotland managers have had the opportunity to achieve.

Good morning!

Thanks for joining us ahead of the big Scotland squad reveal.

Fresh off a long domestic season, thoughts turn to duty in dark blue with two crucial qualifers looming large.

Steve Clarke tends to keep it consistent, with only one or two changes if he can help it, and those tend to have been invovled before.

Stay tuned on the LIVE blog to see who’s in for the Norway and Georgia clashes.
