Sheffield United news: Transfer blow, Burnley & Leeds United want ex-striker, rivals eye winger
Today’s Sheffield United headlines include missing out on a reported target and transfer news from elsewhere in the top flight.
Transfer blow as reported target completes move
One of the players said to be on Paul Heckingbottom’s radar has joined Fenerbahce. The Turkish giants have today announced the capture of Ryan Kent on a free transfer.
The 26-year-old, who played with Heckingbottom at Barnsley, is leaving Rangers and Sheffield United had been heavily linked. The Blades were even said to have held talks with the former Liverpool man, who was credited with interest from Burnley and Leeds United.
However, he has decided to make the move to Turkey instead. Fenerbahce confirmed it had reached an agreement in a statement: “Our club has reached an agreement with Ryan Kent, whose contract with Glasgow Rangers has expired, for a period of four years.

“The official contract will be signed after the health checks to be made when our player arrives in our country for the season’s camp and we present it to the public.”
Burnley pushing Leeds United for former Blade
United’s fellow promoted rivals Burnley are the latest club being linked with former Sheffield United striker Che Adams. The 26-year-old is also believed to be on the radar of Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.
He is being linked with a move away from relegated Southampton, with only one year left on his contract. Reports suggest the fee is in the region of £12m and Adams is open to a move.
The forward joined United in 2014 from non-league Ilkeston under Nigel Clough and was a big hit, famously scoring two goals against Tottenham Hotspur in the league cup semi-final at Bramall Lane as the Blades came ever so close to pulling off a major shock.
Rivals eye winger
United’s Premier League rivals Brighton are reportedly preparing to make a record £45m bid for Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho. It is being claimed he will be allowed to leave Old Trafford this summer and that the Red Devils are open to offers.
He made the switch to England in the summer of 2021 in a £73m deal from Borussia Dortmund but has failed to live up to expectation. Brighton were said to have made an enquiry last month but were knocked back.
However, the change of stance has given Albion encouragement to make a move.
Premier League departure
Aston Villa have announced that Christian Purslow is to step down from his role as chief executive after five years at the club.
Purslow joined Villa in September 2018, shortly after owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris took over at Villa Park with the club in the Championship. Villa are now established back in the Premier League and qualified for the Europa Conference League next season.
In a statement on the club’s website, Purslow said: “It has been a total privilege to lead Villa for the last five years. I am proud that I leave the club in a much better position on and off the pitch than when I arrived.”
Spurs want Bee keeper
Tottenham are looking to do a deal for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, but have been put off by the asking price. The Spain international could become Ange Postecoglou’s first Spurs signing after positive talks, according to the Press Association.
Tottenham are still the only club in discussions with Raya’s representatives but Brentford boss Thomas Frank has set a £40million price tag for the 27-year-old. He has only has 12 months left on his deal at the club, but Raya’s representatives feel the asking price is too high for someone who only has a year left on their contract.
Sharp tipped to return
Billy Sharp is being tipped to return to Bramall Lane when he hangs up his boots. The 37-year-old is leaving Bramall Lane when his contract expires at the end of the month and former Blades striker Carl Asaba expects him to come back in a coaching role when he finally finishes playing.
