Smokers fined thousands for dropping cigarette butts in Somerset streets

Smokers in North Somerset have been hit with thousands of pounds worth of fines – for dropping cigarette butts in the street. Thirty four people found themselves in court for breaching public space protection orders (PSPOs) by littering in a public place.

The prosecutions were brought by North Somerset Council. Pet owners also found themselves before the court. Three people were charged with walking a dog off a lead in an area where they must be on leads while two pet owners were fined for having a dog in an exclusion zone.

Total fines ranged from £156 to £508 depending on means and whether a guilty plea was entered. North Somerset Council were awarded costs in all cases. Each person had been given a fixed penalty notice for £75 and sent at least one reminder letter but failed to pay.
