Manchester City are reigning champions after beating Liverpool to the finish line in a neck-and-neck 2021/22 title race where a comeback win on the final day of the season against Aston Villa secured a fourth title in five years for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were on course for a quadruple last season but were forced to settle for just an FA Cup and Carabao Cup win and will return trying to win the title again just as they did in 2020.
It was a dramatic season for Chelsea a year ago with Roman Abramovich now replaced by Todd Boehly as owner in west London. He will want an instant return on his hefty investment at Stamford Bridge while Tottenham, back in the Champions League, will want to kick on once more too.
It’s not all about the action at the top though with Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest promoted to the top tier for 2021/22 and hoping to hold their own against the best English football has to offer and avoid the drop.

Both sides should make their full complement of substitutions in the second half, with the final 45 minutes of the season a good time to test options from the bench. Southampton could use Aribo or Adam Armstrong to help in attack with nothing left to lose, while Livramento could get some time in his recovery from injury. Liverpool will most likely withdraw both Firmino and Milner to receive their ovations, with Henderson, Diaz, Gakpo and Carvalho all capable of filling in.

Despite having nothing to play for on the final day, both Southampton and Liverpool have done their best to entertain the crowd, with the two finishing the first half level at 2-2. Nerves got the better of the hosts early on, with McCarthy’s decision to play out from the back despite the press leading to a Jota goal into an empty net. Things would go from bad to worse for Selles’ side, with Saints conceding just four minutes later to a close-range Firmino strike. To their credit, already relegated Southampton battled back and equalised within a quarter-hour of Liverpool’s second, with great takes from Ward-Prowse and Sulemana making it a contest ahead of the second period of play.
