The Derbyshire people who have been named on King’s Birthday Honours list

An array of local people representing charities, politics, industry, and sport as well as Derbyshire’s chief fire officer feature in the King’s Birthday Honours list – the first birthday honours to be issued by King Charles.

They are among more than 1,039 recipients nationally, including Davina McCall for her career as a broadcaster and campaigner and footballer-turned-pundit Ian Wright for services to charity and football. The list also awards three Companions of Honour – of which there are only 65 recipients at any time – Dame Anna Wintour, for her services to fashion and publishing, author Sir Ian McEwan for his service to literature and Professor Sir John Bell, for his services to medicine and medical research.

The oldest recipient in this summer’s list is Joan Willettt who is 106 years old and receives a British Empire Medal for her charitable fundraising for the British Heart Foundation. The youngest recipient is Junior Jay Frood who is 18 years old and receives the same award for services to vulnerable children.

Locally the recipients include:

Dr Amarjit (Amo) Raju OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire)

Becoming an OBE in the honours list is the icing on the cake for Dr Raju, who also gained an honorary doctorate and won a couple of other awards in recognition of his services to disabled people, carers and the awareness of mental health. Dr Raju is the chief executive of Disability Direct, a charity for the rights and well-being of disabled individuals and he was extremely surprised to hear he was going to be honoured.

He said: “I had a letter from the Cabinet Office about four weeks ago informing me and asking if I wanted to accept the OBE. It was only when I emailed to say I would and got a response from the Cabinet Office that it became very real.”

Dr Raju’s work spans a range of areas, including social care, advocacy, policy development, and community engagement. He has played a pivotal role in spearheading initiatives that promote universal access to welfare rights, social care, mental well-being and in excess of 70 services spanning a career of nearly 30 years. His expertise in income generation through social enterprise has ensured the charity is today almost self-sufficient.
