The picturesque Kent village that feels like ‘stepping back in time’

There are so many beautiful villages in Kent that are worth visiting, but picking one to explore will be the most challenging part. However if you’re looking for a picturesque village, Eynsford would be the ideal location.

Located just a few miles south of Dartford, the real-life postcard is part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has plenty to offer. The village is surrounded by farmland, ancient woodlands and low grasslands – making it perfect for those who love the great outdoors.

The village even had the highest population in the Dartford area back in the 19th century with 841 inhabitants. But what makes this village so special is its history, and its old buildings including its castle.

And with spells of warmer weather upon us, Eynsford is perfect for a stroll around timber-framed homes dotted through the village and white weatherboard houses. Visitors can cross the picturesque hump-back bridge, dating from at least the 17th century, spanning the River Darent.

People from all across the country come to visit the Ford at Riverside, Eynsford Castle, Lullingstone Roman Villa and Lullingstone Castle. The ruins of Eynsford Castle, which is managed by English Heritage and is free to visit, are just off the High Street.

There is also an early Norman church which is just opposite the bridge which is believed to have been built in the years around 1100 . It is a Grade I-listed building dedicated to St Martin, the third bishop of Tours, France.
