Two Stoke-on-Trent Tory MPs don’t vote as Boris Johnson partygate report passed

Veteran MP Bill Cash is among seven Tories who have refused to approve a partygate report that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson knowingly misled Parliament. The Stone MP – who is quitting the House of Commons at the next general election – cast his vote last night.

The vote also saw five Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Tory MPs – Jo Gideon, Aaron Bell, Karen Bradley, Theo Clarke and Kate Kniveton – back the report.

But six other MPs – Jonathan Gullis, Jack Brereton, Michael Fabricant, Amanda Milling, Christopher Pincher and Gavin Williamson – did not vote at all. It is not yet known whether they abstained deliberately or were simply too busy with other engagements to attend the vote.

StokeonTrentLive is approaching Mr Gullis and Mr Brereton regarding their no-votes.

But Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Jo Gideon – who is standing down at the next general election – has explained why she backed the report. It last week found Mr Johnson knowingly misled parliament and recommended a 90-day suspension – despite Mr Johnson already standing down as an MP.

Ms Gideon said: “As a Member of Parliament, I am acutely aware of my duty to my constituents and the wider public. I share the sentiments of those who followed the rules while others did not. Parliament must hold itself to the highest standards. There must be honesty, accountability, and no immunity for wrongdoing – even for a Prime Minister.
