Uniswap scam alert: Fraudsters pose as executives and create a fake website

Hayden Adams, the creator of the Uniswap protocol and CEO of Uniswap Labs, recently expressed his surprise on Twitter about a scam where individuals created a fake Uniswap website.

In a tweet, Adams showed expressed surprise at the convoluted nature of the scam, highlighting that it required a significant amount of effort. He further revealed that the scammers had gone so far as to include content from the Chinese community in their scheme and even included links directing users to the legitimate Uniswap app on their deceptive website.

To add an extra layer of credibility to their scheme, the scammers went to great lengths to host an hour-long Zoom session intake which showed individuals posing as high-ranking Uniswap executives. This orchestrated video presentation was designed to trick viewers into believing the authenticity of the scam. Hayden Adams, upon viewing the video, expressed his bewilderment saying, “Video is crazy. No idea who any of those people are.”

To dispel any misconceptions, Hayden Adams made it clear that neither Uniswap nor the Foundation had any association or involvement with the video in question or the individuals appearing in it.

Crypto Twitter speculated that the scam could be spinning a video with people in Shenzhen, China is promoting $UNI, Uniswap’s native cryptocurrency. The video reportedly bore titles such as “The first Uniswap Asian Summit” and “Guest: CEO of Uniswap.”

Speculative discussions arose within Crypto Twitter about the scam unfolding, suggesting it centered around an engaging video. This video purportedly featured individuals in Shenzhen, China, promoting Uniswap’s native cryptocurrency known as $UNI. The video reportedly had standout titles, such as “The first Uniswap Asian Summit” and “Guest: CEO of Uniswap.”

Hayden Adams, along with his team, has been engaged in efforts to combat and mitigate the impact of this scam. Their efforts include removing the domain used to create the spoofed website.

Roland, a person with the Twitter handle @thegrasscrown, shared his surprise at the event described in Hayden Adams’ tweet. Despite living near Shenzhen, he said he was not familiar with such an event and speculated that it could have been organized discreetly due to China’s strict cryptocurrency regulations.

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) banned crypto exchanges in the country, claiming they encouraged government funding without approval. China has banned all cryptocurrency operations since September 2021.
