When will thunderstorms hit? Hour-by-hour Met Office forecast for the North East after yellow weather warning

After a sweltering week, we’re set for an abrupt end to the summery weather with thunderstorms expected from Sunday afternoon on Tyneside.

The Met Office has a yellow thunderstorm warning in place for almost the entirety of England and Wales, including the North East. The warning is in place from 12pm to midnight, but based on the forecast for Newcastle, the heavy rain won’t hit our area until later in the day. Whether we get thunder and lightning remains to be seen.

The forecasters say to expect rain that could lead to “difficult driving conditions and possible road closures” There is also a risk of “fast flowing or deep floodwater”.

The Met Office forecast for Sunday is: “Some bright spells through the morning, with a risk for the odd shower at times through the day. Showers increasing in frequency through the late afternoon, with a larger area of persistent and heavy rain pushing into southern areas. Maximum temperature 18 °C.”

And tonight: “Area of heavy and persistent rain moves northwards across the region, clearing northern parts around dawn. Clearer, brighter spells following through the early morning. Minimum temperature 13 °C.”
