Who Are The Favourites For The League Two 2023-24 Season?

Who Are The Favourites For The League Two 2023-24 Season?

Now that the EFL play-offs have been concluded, we know the 24 teams who will be lining up in League Two for 2023-24. Wrexham are back in the Football League after a 15-year absence following their title triumph in the National League. Also coming up from the fifth tier is Notts County, one of the founding members of the Football League, returning to the EFL after four years away. Their arrival will certainly add some spice to the fourth tier next term.

In League One, MK Dons, Morecambe, Accrington Stanley and Forest Green Rovers were all relegated which will also increase the competitiveness of League Two. It is often difficult to pick the league winners before a ball has been kicked and the transfer window has been shut, but it doesn’t stop people from taking a guess at who they think will be crowned as the league champions next May.

There is no surprise to see both promoted clubs, Wrexham and Notts County, fancied for the title at this stage. Both performed brilliantly in the National League and they each racked up over 100 points over the course of the season, delivering one of the best fifth-tier campaigns on record. Both should have no issues adjusting to the fourth tier and they could really take the league by storm and are expected to challenge for back-to-back promotions.

Hollywood duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have already done so much in the two years they have owned Wrexham, and they have made it their mission to take this club as far as they can. With the resources they have and experienced coach Phil Parkinson at the helm, Wrexham could have a profitable first year back in the EFL. They lured Football League players to the National League, so they shouldn’t have a problem strengthening their ranks in League Two.

Notts County are also expected to be up there for the way they play their football and how the club is operated. Many are expecting the two promoted teams to hit the ground running back in the Football League. Luke Williams is a talented coach and he built a strong squad at Meadow Lane and there are several players who should make the step up to League Two without issue.

The three play-off teams from last year, Stockport County, Salford City and Bradford City, are all expected to challenge near the top of the table again but the additions of Wrexham and Notts County look set to make it that much more challenging. With the investment that Stockport and Salford both have behind them, they will look to rival that of Wrexham when it comes to summer recruitment.

Nigel Clough’s Mansfield Town will also be hoping to be among the pack after missing out on the play-offs on goal difference last term. The Stags contested the play-off final in 2021-22 but with the division being strengthened by the teams coming up and some of the ones that were relegated, Clough could have a tough task on his hands to keep his side in and around the play-off picture.
