Yorkshire’s 11 poshest, most expensive hotels and their cheapest rooms available
These days cheap, comfortable holiday accommodation isn’t hard to find.
But we’re not talking about budget hotels and little guesthouses today. We’re talking about the fanciest, finest and ‘poshest’ hotels – with prices to match – in God’s Own Country.
These are where the rich and famous stay when they’re visiting the White Rose County. For those of more modest means, they’re the dream hotels we might reserve for a special occasion like a wedding anniversary or a divorce party – and it’ll be the cheapest room in the house.

Bank account = bottomless pit? Go large and get the royal suite. You might as well.
For the rest of us who fancy a special treat, we’ve included the cheapest rooms, when you need to book to take advantage of the savings (usually midweek and out of season) and what your ‘base model’ room comes with. Usually, it’s quite a lot.
These are proper hotels rather than guesthouses, B&Bs AirBnBs, cabins, glamping pods or self-catering holiday lets. Here they are in alphabetical order.

1. Black Swan at Oldstead
Tommy Banks’ Michelin-starred restaurant, has nine rooms. It’s £600 midweek but it does include Banks’ famous foraged tasting menu for dinner and breakfast the following morning. Each room, named after a different Yorkshire Dale, is a fine-tuned mix of style, heritage and comfort.

2. Dakota
For modern elegance in the heart of Leeds city centre it has to be the Dakota. Book midweek and you can have a ‘classic double room’ for £135 although that doesn’t include breakfast. Your room will have a double bed, en-suite rainfall shower, 49-inch smart HDTV, rapid wifi and luxury toiletries.
If you’re only staying for a couple of nights you might as well book an ‘executive room’ for about £20 more. It comes with a much larger super-king size bed, a Nespresso machine and a complimentary stocked fridge.

3. Goldsborough Hall
This grade II*-listed stately home in the affluent village of Goldsborough, near Knaresborough, exudes class and tradition. While Goldsborough Hall has suites and larger rooms even its smallest rooms are far from basic.
Each has a kingsize bed, a 50-inch HDTV with Freeview, wifi, a digital wireless power shower and views of the adjacent woodland. Don’t expect much change from £200.
However, Goldsborough has some exceptional offers. From £120 a night, you can have a bigger and better ‘luxury’ bedroom – plus a six-course dinner and breakfast.

4. The Grand, York
Definitely not to be confused with The Grand in Scarborough, York city centre’s only five-star hotel is every bit your classic city hotel. This Edwardian hotel makes the most of its original features while adding plenty of modern luxuries.
Even the standard ‘classic rooms’ are stylish and sizeable with spacious marble bathrooms and complimentary use of the spa and pool. A ‘classic room’, which includes a kingsize bed, a sunken marble bath and powerful overhead shower, costs from £175 a night.

5. Grantley Hall
This bolthole of the rich and famous, near Ripon, is arguably Yorkshire’s most luxurious hotel, complete with Shaun Rankin’s Michelin-starred restaurant. It’s very expensive and a bit ostentatious for some but as previous guests have said, “five stars isn’t enough”.
The base room is the 38-square metre ‘deluxe’ which comes with a super-kingsize bed, marble bathroom, free wifi, pillow and robe menus and access to the Elite gym and Three Graces Spa. Rooms start off at £550 a night on a weekday out of season.

6. The Hare
Not far from The Black Swan at Oldstead (see above) is this 12th-century inn which describes itself as a ‘restaurant with rooms’. Each room has a free-standing bathtub, a large walk-in shower, a kingsize bed or larger and rustic original features galore.
A night at The Hare, which includes a tasting menu dinner at the acclaimed restaurant and breakfast, will cost you £475 per couple during the week. It’s an extra £50 for a Friday or Saturday.

7. Middleton Lodge
Characterful accommodation is scattered around this 200-acre estate, near Scotch Corner. The joint cheapest option is the Shepherd’s Hut at £230 and while it’s unique it’s not exactly luxurious. For a bit more spec at the same price go for the Coach House Cosy.

8. Rudding Park
This stately home with sleek, contemporary styling is ideal for top-tier spa and golf breaks. A base room in the Ribston wing, which includes a kingsize bed, 32-inch TV, free wifi and access to the spa, will set you back £249.
However, Rudding Park has an offer called ‘You’d Be a Fool to Miss This’ which grants you a night’s stay and lunch at the Clocktower Brasserie for £149. You would be.

9. Swinton Park
This crenellated, grade II*-listed stately home describes itself as ‘opulent’ which isn’t far off the mark. The cheapest rooms are the ‘Knight’s Rooms’ located in the Coach House rather than the castle itself.
They’re still very spacious, brimming with character and complete with a TV, robe, slippers and wifi. And so you would expect at £255 per night.

10. The Vices
You won’t find anywhere more hip than this York boutique hotel in a former cop shop run by two Italians who know a thing or two about fine art and fine wine. The Vices has just three suites with original artwork, super-kingsize beds, an iPad to control the lighting and audio, complimentary wifi and luxury Frette robes and linen.

11. Yorebridge House
This five-star, triple AA Rosette hotel in a former grammar school is modern, traditional, unfussy and luxurious in equal measure. For one of Yorebridge House’s stunning themed rooms expect to pay £250 a night – and more if you want one with a hot tub – but there are out-of-season three-for-two night offers and discounted last-minute deals.
