Luton Town vs Sunderland match preview

The return leg of a finely poised Championship playoff tie between Luton Town and Sunderland is set to play out at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday, May 16th.

This, of course, comes after Sunderland continued their head-turning stretch of form to take a slender advantage into this evening’s action.

After battling their way into the top-six – and in turn a spot in the playoffs – courtesy of a final day drubbing of Preston North End, the Black Cats welcomed high-flying Luton to the Stadium of Light this past weekend as underdogs in the eyes of most.

Upon Elijah Adebayo handing the visitors the advantage just beyond the ten-minute mark, concern therefore no doubt quickly began to set in across the Sunderland faithful.

Tony Mowbray’s troops, though, soon showcased their admirable fighting spirit once more.

First, shortly before the interval, Amad Diallo pulled Saturday’s hosts level, courtesy of a stunning left-footed free-kick.

Then, just past the hour mark, the game’s decisive moment was forthcoming, Trai Hume bagging what could ultimately prove enough to guide the Black Cats to the playoff final at the end of the month.

Luton, though, formidable at home throughout the campaign, will certainly have something to say on the matter.

Prior to their trip to Tyne and Wear, the Hatters had been condemned to the wrong side of the result just once in their last 20 outings.

Not only that, but they had notched wins in five of their last six at Kenilworth Road, notching a quartet of clean sheets along the way.

Such stellar endeavours mean that Rob Edwards and co. will head into Tuesday’s affair confident in their chances of turning things around.

And we at 101 are backing Luton, when all is said and done, to manage precisely that, on their way to booking a spot at Wembley’s playoff showpiece on May 27th.
