Leeds United news as Wilfried Gnonto plays key part in Italy play-off victory

Here are the latest evening Leeds United headlines on Sunday, June 18.

Gnonto’s key contribution

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto played a key role as Italy beat the Netherlands 3-2 in their Nations League third-place play-off.

The Whites forward was handed a place in the starting XI by Roberto Mancini, with the Azzurri getting off to a perfect start when Federico Dimarco netted after just six minutes. Gnonto was then involved as Italy doubled their advantage, as his shot from the edge of the area hit Davide Frattesi, who then slammed the ball home.

Gnonto was subbed off just after the hour mark with Italy still 2-0 up and watched the two sides trade goals before a late Georginio Wijnaldum strike set up a tense finish, but Italy were able to hold on and claim third place.

A busy summer for Gnonto continues, as he will now link up with Italy’s under-21s squad for their European Championship tilt later this month.

Molumby’s character admired by Corberan amid Leeds United links

The attitude and determination of Leeds United-linked midfielder Jayson Molumby will take him far in the game. That’s the belief of his West Bromwich Albion head coach Carlos Corberan, who could be heard waxing lyrical about the Republic of Ireland international earlier in the season.

According to Alan Nixon, Leeds are keen on Molumby as they prepare for life back in the second tier of English football. The 23-year-old was a key man for West Brom this season, making 47 appearances in all competitions and finding the back of the net on four separate occasions.
