Liverpool news and transfers LIVE – Sadio Mane return, Mason Mount boost, Alexis Mac Allister future

Hello and welcome to the Liverpool news and transfers live blog for Tuesday, May 16.

It bills to be a busy summer for Liverpool in the transfer market. Alexis Mac Allister remains a target of the Reds in the upcoming window.

There are conflicting reports surrounding the Argentine suggesting that his next destination will depend on whether the team has qualified for the Champions League or not. What is known is that speculation surrounding the Seagulls star will continue in the coming months.

The Reds have been linked with Ajax’s Edson Alvarez in recent months. However, reports in Germany have suggested that Bundesliga duo Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are ‘very interested’ in the Mexican.

Former sporting director Michael Edwards is among the potential candidates to become the director of football at West Ham United, it has been claimed. He has been away from football for over a year after leaving the Reds where he was subsequently replaced by Julian Ward.

In Spain, Real Madrid are said to be challenging Klopp in the race to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga. Los Blancos are reportedly looking to sign the youngster and loan him out which, according to various news outlets, has put the Reds front of the queue.

Team of the Week

Three Liverpool players were chosen to be in Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week after the 3-0 win over Leicester last night.

Curtis Jones scored twice as Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a brilliant free kick in the second half.

Mohamed Salah joined the two goalscorers in the Team of the Week after his three assists at the King Power.

Two for Jones

It was a fine performance by Curtis Jones last night as he scored twice in a 3-0 win over Leicester.

Virgil van Dijk fumes at Craig Pawson as Leicester fans let themselves down against Liverpool

Liverpool secured a seventh successive victory when they romped past relegation-threatened Leicester City on Monday evening.

Two goals from Curtis Jones and a thumping strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold earned the Reds a 3-0 triumph. The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side still have a faint hope of Champions League qualification, although a Europa League berth has now been sealed.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at the King Power Stadium.

Van Dijk bemused

It’s safe to say referee Craig Pawson and his officials didn’t exactly win over either set of players and supporters with some, er, interesting decision-making.

Leicester were perhaps justified taking issue at the award of the free-kick that led to Liverpool’s third, while the visitors were increasingly perplexed by a number of fouls being given against them first half.

And that led to Virgil van Dijk being particularly outraged when Pawson brought play back when the Reds were racing away on a particularly dangerous counter-attack. He really wasn’t happy.

Leeds ‘in the hunt’ for Milner

A potential return to Leeds United could be on the cards for James Milner, should the Whites avoid Premier League relegation.

Brighton remain the favourites to recruit Milner this summer, though Leeds are said to be ‘in the hunt’ for the veteran midfielder and ‘cannot be ruled out’ at this stage.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who add there are ‘a number of offers on the table’ for the 2019 Champions League winner.

Mane departure ‘expected’

Sadio Mane is likely to leave Bayern Munich this summer after only one season at the club, it has been suggested.

The ex-Liverpool star got off to a bright start in Bavaria, though saw his progress halted after sustaining an injury which kept him sidelined for three months. Involved in a high-profile incident Leroy Sane after a Champions League loss to Manchester City, Mane was suspended by Bayern and now appears to not be part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the future.

Sky Sports state he is ‘expected’ to exit in the coming weeks, with a return to the Premier League ‘his most realistic option’.

Kelleher valuation deemed ‘unrealistic’

Brentford are reportedly unhappy with Liverpool’s valuation of Caoimhin Kelleher as they search for a potential new No.1

Current Bees goalkeeper David Raya has been linked with a summer exit, though the club are claimed to be ‘awaiting bids’ for the Spaniard.

The Daily Mail have claimed Kelleher is a player who has been ‘discussed’ by Brentford, though counter this by adding the London club view a £15m price tag as ‘unrealistic’.

‘Growing expectation’ Mount will move on

There is a ‘growing expectation’ Mason Mount will be leaving Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Mount in recent weeks amid a contract standoff between the London club and the England international.

With a new deal yet to be agreed, the Guardian have stated it is increasingly likely the 24-year-old will depart Stamford Bridge.

The report adds Chelsea are ‘not optimistic’ of keeping Mount and that Liverpool remain ‘favourites’ to recruit the midfielder.

Two years ago today

On this day two years ago, Alisson Becker became Liverpool’s goalscoring hero at the Hawthorns.

Requiring a win to keep alive Champions League hopes, the Brazilian shot-stopper headed home with a 95th-minute winner to secure all three points for the Reds in dramatic fashion.

Alexis Mac Allister makes ‘Champions League decision’ amid Liverpool transfer links

Alexis Mac Allister reportedly wants Champions League football if he leaves Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.

As reported by the ECHO earlier this month, Liverpool have placed the Argentina star near the top of their transfer shortlist but are braced for competition as the race heats up for the midfielder.

The Reds recently took the decision to step away from a club-record pursuit of the £130m-rated Jude Bellingham in favour of spreading their transfer budget for the summer across a handful of other, less expensive options, and Mac Allister is one of those that fits the bill.

But according to a report by The Athletic, the 24-year-old wants Champions League football if he leaves the Amex this summer. The report goes on to claim that Mac Allister’s agent and father, Carlos, who looks after his son’s interest, haven’t agreed a deal with any club as things stand.

Liverpool ‘leading the chase’ for Veiga

Liverpool are claimed to be ‘leading the race’ to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.

The Spaniard has emerged as a transfer target for a host of clubs, having caught the eye in La Liga, after what has been an impressive season for the 20-year-old.

Veiga has scored nine times in the Spanish top flight this term, having broken into the first team during the 2019/20 season.

A latest report by TEAMtalk has explained the Reds are ‘pushing to sign’ the player and are currently leading the way to recruit the youngster. The article adds Liverpool are ‘willing to meet’ the €40m (£34.8m) clause in the player’s contract.

Liverpool pre-season plans with Bayern Munich clash and Premier League opponents confirmed

Liverpool will head back to Southeast Asia this summer as part of the club’s pre-season preparations, with the commercial motivation behind the move clear.

While many of European football’s biggest clubs are making their way stateside and attempting to put their flag in the ground in the US market in a bid to tap into the boom in ‘soccer’ that has been seen across the Atlantic, the Reds will head to Singapore to take on Bayern Munich for the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy, as well as facing Leicester City as part of the Singapore Festival of Football.

The Trophy, for which Liverpool’s front-of-shirt sponsor Standard Chartered hold the title sponsorship, will see the Reds play the Foxes at the National Stadium on Sunday, July 30, before a game at the same venue, where they faced Crystal Palace last summer, three days later, when Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern side will be the opponents.
