Area students receive scholarships

The Dennison Rotary Club recently awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Claymont High School seniors Alexa Brick and Brody Butler.

Indian Valley High School senior Maggie Johnson recently was awarded the Guernsey-Muskingum Electric Cooperative Scholarship.

The BBB Charitable & Educational Fund recently awarded scholarships to two area graduating seniors in the annual BBB Life Lessons Essay Contest. Bethany Shuman of Minerva High School in Minerva won third place and a $1,000 scholarship. Evan Siedel of Conotton Valley High School in Bowerston won sixth place and a $500 scholarship.

The Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation recently awarded scholarships to Tuscarawas County students Emma Leggett and Adeline Kendle.

Magnolia fire hydrants to be flushed

MAGNOLIA − The Village of Magnolia Water Department will flush fire hydrants this week between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Residents should expect some discoloration of water after the hydrants have been flushed.

Courthouse closed Monday

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Courthouse and office building will be closed Monday to observe Juneteenth.

Library system offers programs

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host the following programs.

Cutting the Cord, noon and 6 p.m. Tuesday at the main library, 121 Fair Ave. NW. Taught by Technology Training Coordinator Leigh Burnham, the program will explore alternatives to cable TV. Attendees will be able to learn about streaming services, how to connect these services to a TV, and more. Ohio author Mindy McGinnis, 6 p.m. Tuesday at the main library. “Stories from the Past: Living History” series, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the main library. Local historian Noel B. Poirier will discuss local documented UFO sightings during the 1950s and ‘60s.
East Avenue Cemetery tour, 10 a.m. Saturday. Kim Jurkovic, curator of the Tuscarawas County Historical Society, will lead a walk through the East Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia to visit the final resting places and tell stories about interesting people from the county’s past. Attendees can meet at the cemetery’s mausoleum near 1520 Delaware Drive.
History of Monroe Mall, 6 p.m. June 27 at the Tusky Branch, 209 S. Main St. Kim Jurkovic will discuss the history of Monroe Mall, and participants can share their own memories. Alumni Award of Excellence

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Leadership Tuscarawas has selected Stephenie Wilson is the 2023 recipient of the Alumni Award of Excellence. This award is given annually to someone who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Leadership Tuscarawas program and their chosen profession and has helped to improve the quality of life of people who live and work in Tuscarawas County.

Wilson is vice president of human resources at First Federal Community Bank. She is a graduate of the 2003 Signature Class of Leadership Tuscarawas and serves on the Indian Valley Foundation Executive Committee and the Tuscarawas University Foundation Board.

Career Center members qualify for national competition

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Two Buckeye Career Center Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members have qualified for the FCCLA National Leadership Conference from July 2 to 6.

Olivia Andrews (Teaching Professions/Dover) and Madison Powell (Teaching Professions/Strasburg) placed third in the state and won a gold medal in Professional Presentation. With their high score, the team moves on to nationals in Denver, Colorado.

Other winners include a silver medal for Brianna Cook (Teaching Professions/Indian Valley) and Alisha Shaw (Teaching Professions/Indian Valley) in Interpersonal Communications and a silver for Kaylee Hilton (Early Childhood Education/Strasburg) in Observation and Assessment.

While at the conference, the BCC FCCLA chapter was awarded a $2,500 award for placing in the top 10 entries for the Families Acting for Traffic Safety (FACTS) driving initiative competition.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a national Career and Technical Student Organization for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public and private school through grade 12.

Libraries host donation drive for those in need

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System in partnership with Tusc Against Trafficking will embrace its Summer Reading theme, All Together Now, by hosting a donation drive for those in need.

Donations will be accepted May 30 through Aug. 12 at all five library locations. Accepted items must be new and include self-care and bathroom items, laundry and cleaning products, and more.

Ice cream social is June 25

RAGERSVILLE – The Ragersville Historical Society will have its annual ice cream social from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25. Food will be by donation.

Diaper Bank adds to available products

The Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides support to families experiencing diaper needs, now offers menstruation products. Supplies are purchased, collected, and prepared by Diaper Bank volunteers and distributed through Community Distribution Partners in Stark, Tuscarawas, Carroll, Wayne, Medina, and Harrison counties. These partners include food pantries, family service agencies, and faith-based organizations. A list of distribution partners is at www.heartofohiodiaperbank.org/distribution-partners. Each agency has its own set of requirements for qualifications to receive support.
