The South London high street that’s so ‘disgusting’ locals say it’s too ‘upsetting’ to walk down
South London residents have said the high street in their area is so filthy that it’s “disgusting” and too “upsetting” to walk down. Located just a 25 minute train from London Bridge, Plumstead in Greenwich sits just east of Woolwich town centre.
The area is known for its scenic common and lively high street. However, some locals in the area have said rubbish around the area’s main shopping stretch has become such a problem that they are actively avoiding it.
Niamh, who did not wish to give her second name, said she had lived in Plumstead since 2006. She said she rarely uses the high street as it’s “disgusting” and that rubbish is a “big problem” in the area.

She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “There’s also a lot of homelessness, there’s a lot of drugs. It’s actually just upsetting to come up that street. So I tend to just stay away from Plumstead High Street.”
In February this year, Greenwich Council reduced the frequency of black bin collections in the borough from weekly to every two weeks. The council said in a statement that the change came after a six week consultation in 2020 and had been done to reduce vehicle emissions by doing fewer collections and incinerating less waste overall.
Stephen Rookes, 64, said he was born in Plumstead but returned to live in the area several years ago. He said he has noticed rubbish on the high street but that local waste collectors are doing their best to keep on top of the issue.
Mr Rookes told the LDRS: “It is [a problem], but believe it or not my friend Keith does this high street. I always know when he’s on because it’s immaculate.”
The local said a lot of waste on the street comes from locals drinking publicly. He said he often notices beer bottles left outside of shop fronts.
He said: “It never used to be like that. I was brought up with my grandparents and all those years ago, you could go shopping or leave your front door open. But now, you just can’t do it… I absolutely hate it. If I knew it was going to be like this, I wouldn’t have come back.”
Greenwich Council approved its latest budget at a meeting on February 23. Council documents included details of plans to add special teams to tackle high levels of flytipping and to jet wash several town centres across the borough under a £578,000 investment. Among the list of roads affected was Plumstead High Street, in the hopes of bringing a “better experience and increased usage” to the area for residents.
Mudasar Munir, 40, has lived in Plumstead for over 15 years. Having worked in his family-owned computer repair shop on Plumstead High Street for 12 years, he said he appreciates efforts by the council to jet wash the street. He said he has noticed locals leaving rubbish from their homes in bin bags on the road overnight.
Mr Munir told the LDRS: “They just put it there, and the foxes are around and then they make a mess everywhere. They try to find the food from inside. It’s happened many times.”
Despite moves towards cleaning up the street, the shop worker said other council initiatives have made business difficult for the shop. He said paid parking on the high street introduced by the council has added to the list of struggles the business faces, such as Covid and Brexit.
He said: “That’s been giving us a lot of new problems for us. [Customers] come and park here just to pick up something new, but the ticket man is always around. It’s not really good to be honest, we’re not happy… The area is not really as good as it was before.”
Dan Warrick, 37, said he moved to Plumstead High Street last September from Peckham. He said that despite rarely using the high street, he’s noticed the sacks of waste left along the road.

Mr Warrick told the LDRS: “They just chuck all their rubbish against the side… You look around and you start noticing stuff. All that’s just down to the council and road sweepers, isn’t it? But you’re fighting a losing battle wherever you go. There’s always rubbish so there’s no point.”
Greenwich Council was approached for comment, but had not responded at the time of publication.
